Sonic The Hedgehog’s Voice Actor Confirms How SEGA Describes The Blue Blur

Even after many years since its first appearance, the impact of this character is still defined by just four key qualities.

When I first began voicing Sonic, the creators simply described him as ‘cool, blue, rebellious teenager.’ That was my initial direction – a core idea to build from. As I got to know the character better, I naturally started adding my own interpretations and personality to bring him to life, always striving to capture his essence.

Drummond always makes sure Sonic feels like a distinct character, no matter what challenges he faces or how much he eats. He explained that he focused on building on the already well-known personality that makes Sonic so memorable, adding a human touch to the speedy hedgehog.

The actor described the character as incredibly self-assured – after all, he’s the fastest in the world! He imagines the character would react to danger with amusement, almost dismissing it. Beyond that, the character is funny and consistently fights for what he believes is right – everything you’d want in a hero. The actor explained he tries to bring those qualities to life by focusing on the character’s inner motivations. He admits it might sound a bit cliché, but he really does strive to embody those traits and channel the spirit of Sonic when he performs.

Ryan Drummond Reflects On The Responsibility of First Voicing Sonic The Hedgehog

Drummond began building the franchise’s long-lasting public image in the late 1990s, a task that came with enormous pressure and expectation.

It means a lot to me knowing I helped shape Sonic into the character he is today, and I think being the first creator gives you that perspective. It’s incredibly rewarding, especially after meeting so many amazing Sonic fans online and in person – their stories have truly become a part of my own life.

Drummond explains that he didn’t try to create a specific, defined personality for Sonic, as SEGA initially suggested. He prefers that Sonic remain open to interpretation, allowing fans to connect with the character in their own way. He shared, “I love that Sonic has become a character that everyone connects with and adds to – it’s really touching.”

You can hear Tom Drummond’s music in games like the Sonic Adventure series and other Sonic titles. If you’re interested in having him make a public appearance, you can contact him through his website.
