So, it looks like Sony’s getting some heat right now. Apparently, people are saying they used AI-generated art, and it’s causing a bit of a stir. It’s kinda frustrating as a gamer when you find out stuff like this – you want to know artists are actually putting in the work, you know?
Luckily, this isn’t about a problem with a game. It’s actually part of a special promotional event, like an advent calendar, and seems to be aimed at gamers in Canada, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
We haven’t found any mention of it on PlayStation’s main social media pages or their official blog yet.
This advent calendar is a marketing promotion where you can earn entries into a raffle by completing quick surveys and tasks. The prizes include a Ghost of Yotei DualSense controller or a PS Plus Premium subscription.
Each time you enter the raffle, you’ll receive a free daily avatar, and it looks like the artwork is created using artificial intelligence.
It’s getting harder to tell when artwork is created by AI, but these avatars still have a certain AI-generated quality, even though they don’t have any of the usual obvious errors, like extra fingers.
One of the clearest signs this isn’t authentic is the use of Japanese writing in a futuristic setting, as the characters displayed aren’t actually accurate.
Compared to the recent AI issues in games like Call of Duty and Fortnite, this isn’t a major problem – it’s simply a marketing promotion.
Sony has a huge collection of impressive concept art from its many popular franchises. Why didn’t they simply use some of that existing artwork to create more engaging avatars?
