The Afeela, an electric vehicle created through a partnership between Sony and Honda, will not be released for sale.
Both the Afeela 1 and the second model have been dropped, the companies have announced.
According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Sony and Honda have cancelled plans for their first car, the AFEELA1, as well as a second planned model.
This seems to be happening because of shifts in the electric vehicle market and Honda re-evaluating its plans for electric cars.
VGC reports that Honda has scrapped plans for multiple electric vehicle releases in North America, potentially resulting in $15.7 billion in losses.
So, Sony Honda Mobility just put out a statement saying that some of the core ideas behind how they were planning to do business have changed. Basically, things Honda was going to contribute – certain technologies and resources – aren’t going to be what they originally thought. It’s a pretty big shift in their plans, from what I understand!
The partnership began in 2021, and their goal is to create the Afeela – a high-end, entertainment-focused vehicle.
The car was designed to heavily incorporate PlayStation technology and aesthetics. A key feature, called Remote Play, would have let passengers play PlayStation 5 games on the car’s screens.
The dashboard will also be customizable, with PlayStation themes on the way. You’ll be able to personalize your Afeela with designs inspired by games like Astro Bot and God of War, among others.
It looks like the project has been cancelled, which is disappointing. However, you can still experience the Afeela virtually in the video game Gran Turismo 7, which is a small consolation.
