Sony has hinted at bringing back a beloved game series that hasn‘t been seen since the PlayStation 2 and 3 era – a series many thought was gone for good. With game development becoming increasingly expensive, companies are often hesitant to create entirely new games and prefer to stick with familiar franchises. Combining this with a trend of reviving nostalgic titles, it makes sense for Sony to revisit its older games. While they’ve largely avoided doing so until now, that might be changing with this particular series.
Sucker Punch Productions, a studio owned by Sony, recently launched *Ghost of Yotei* on PlayStation 5. While the game has been received positively, it hasn’t become a massive hit, and it doesn’t seem likely to match the sales of its previous game, *Ghost of Tsushima*. This leads many to believe the game’s lifespan might be limited. So, what’s next for Sucker Punch? Creating a completely new game is an option, but it’s expensive and carries a lot of risk. The studio doesn’t have many existing franchises to revisit either, with one notable exception: *Sly Cooper*.
“Going Back to Sly”
Brian Fleming, a co-founder and head of Sucker Punch Productions, recently hinted at the studio’s future plans after another successful game launch. He mentioned Sly Cooper as a potential project for 2025.
Fleming explained to VGC that their next project, whether it’s continuing work on *Ghost* or revisiting *Sly*, will depend on their desire to dedicate enough time and attention to do it well. This means they can only focus on one project at a time.
Mentioning Sly Cooper feels similar to Naughty Dog referencing Jax and Daxter – it’s unexpected and out of the blue. This feels strange unless there have been discussions about reviving the series, which hasn’t appeared since 2013.
Don’t Get Too Hopeful
The possibility of a new *Sly Cooper* game has excited many longtime PlayStation fans. However, the same reasons why we don’t anticipate Sucker Punch Productions creating a completely new game series also apply to *Sly Cooper*: the series simply didn’t sell very well. Sucker Punch is a large studio, and while there have been several *Sly Cooper* games released, the franchise has only sold a few million copies total. Unless the developer and Sony are confident they can create a *Sly Cooper* game that will be a huge commercial success, it’s a risky investment. It makes more sense to focus on established franchises like *Ghost of Tsushima* or other IPs that are already popular and actively developed.
Beyond just this small nod to *Sly Cooper* fans, studio leaders have previously indicated they weren’t keen on revisiting the franchise. A major reason for this was that the current development team wasn’t involved with the original *Sly Cooper* games.
