According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony might push back the release of the PlayStation 6 to 2028 or 2029.
Recent rumors suggest Sony is thinking about delaying the release of its next PlayStation console, potentially until 2028 or 2029, sources say.
So, I was reading this report about how AI is suddenly driving up demand for computer chips and RAM. Apparently, that’s a big part of why Sony is thinking about pushing back the release of the PS6 – they’re having trouble getting the parts they need, and prices are going up because of all this AI stuff.
Bloomberg also reports that this would disrupt a well-planned effort to keep players engaged between console releases. Nintendo, a key competitor that boosted demand in 2025 with its new Switch 2 and related storage card sales, is also considering a price increase for that device in 2026, according to sources familiar with their plans. Representatives from both Sony and Nintendo did not respond to requests for comment.
Recent discussions indicate Sony may not be able to release the PlayStation 6 in 2027, despite earlier plans to do so. Last month, an analyst at MST Financial stated the PS6’s launch would likely be pushed back further than anticipated, a sentiment echoed in reports from late 2025.
There were reports that Sony might release the PlayStation 6 in 2027, but that now seems unlikely. However, the next Xbox console is expected to launch next year. According to AMD CEO Lisa Su, Microsoft is planning a new Xbox in 2027 – a console that will be more like a powerful PC – and AMD is helping to make it happen.
Even though the cost of RAM is going up, Sony says it has secured enough supply to last through the 2026 holiday season. The company seems to be anticipating potential difficulties specifically with the PlayStation 6.
