Sony continues to express its plans for expanding its stake and management of Bungie, aiming to seamlessly incorporate the creator of Destiny 2 (and Marathon) into PlayStation Studios.
After a series of contentious issues and setbacks, an update from Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Lin Tao, was released during the Q&A session of their recent financial report. Tao explained (as reported by VGC) that when Bungie was acquired, they were given a great deal of autonomy. However, as they become more integrated into PlayStation Studios, that independence is gradually decreasing.
In essence, Tao implied that over time, it would be advantageous for Bungie to integrate with PlayStation Studios, viewing it as a continuous journey rather than a one-time event.
Sony’s acquisition of Bungie was aimed at bolstering the company’s live-service initiatives during the PS5 generation. However, their plans have been hindered by internal issues within Bungie itself. Unfortunately, Destiny 2, once a popular title, has seen a decline in player numbers with each expansion. The team has also experienced rounds of layoffs, but perhaps the most contentious issue they’re currently grappling with is allegations of copyright infringement in Marathon regarding the art used.
During the very same earnings discussion, Tao mentioned that Sony anticipates Marathon will be launched before the conclusion of their current fiscal year. This fiscal year concludes at the beginning of April 2026. However, it’s important to note that this is not a guarantee. An official announcement about this matter has yet to be made.
Tao clarified that they’re currently working on updates for the project and plans to announce a new launch date in the Fall. When asked about the possibility of the Marathon being called off altogether, Tao said, “We’re fixing the issues right now, so we anticipate this release will go ahead. If it doesn’t, we might need to reassess our valuation, but as things stand, that’s not expected.” (Sony CFO was referring to Tao.)
The release date for Marathon, initially planned for September 23rd, 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, has been postponed. Bungie, without referring to any art-related disputes, stated that the additional development time will enable them to shape Marathon into a game that truly embodies your enthusiasm.
