Sony is finding more success with its games on PC and Xbox thanks to a change in strategy. They’re now more willing to release games outside of PlayStation, and they’re doing a good job of choosing the right titles to bring to those platforms.
Sony’s latest financial report shows strong profits from its games sold on platforms other than the PlayStation Store – a category they call “Other Software.” This segment generated $2.37 billion in revenue, suggesting their strategy of releasing games on multiple platforms, including competitors’, and eventually bringing PlayStation exclusives to those platforms, is proving successful.
Releasing PlayStation games on other platforms not only keeps those games available for longer, but also lets players on PC and Xbox enjoy some of Sony’s best titles. It also helps developers create better multiplayer experiences that work across different systems – a great benefit for everyone. However, it’s still unclear how many of these PlayStation games will actually come to PC and Xbox before the next generation of consoles, likely the PlayStation 6, arrives.
As a PlayStation fan, I’m really happy with the direction Sony’s been taking things lately with their gaming division. They’ve had a few bumps in the road recently, but overall, they’re making some fantastic decisions right now.
