Sony Estimated to Have Made $1.5 Billion from Steam, But the Novelty Is Wearing Off

Okay, so a new report just dropped, and it’s saying Sony’s been raking in the cash from Steam! Apparently, they’ve made around $1.5 billion just from bringing their PlayStation games over to PC. That’s a crazy amount of money – it’s awesome to see them supporting PC gaming and getting rewarded for it.

While that number sounds huge, remember it took five years to reach. To put that in perspective, PlayStation brought in about $7 billion in revenue just last quarter.

So, as a fan, it’s pretty amazing to hear how much money PlayStation made! But apparently, Sony has to give Valve a cut – about 30% – meaning they actually kept around $1.2 billion from all that revenue. It’s still a huge number, but less than the total amount earned.

Helldivers 2 is already the best-selling PC game ever released by PlayStation, surpassing both Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War in sales.

It’s notable that the PC versions of recent Sony sequels aren’t selling as well as their original games. For example, Horizon Forbidden West is reportedly selling three times slower than the first Horizon game, and similar trends are being seen with God of War Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

The recent drop in sales indicates that people are losing interest in Sony games on Steam, and these releases aren’t as popular as they used to be.

Releasing the PS5 version and the PC version closer together could boost sales. However, Sony needs to consider how that might affect PS5 console sales, especially with new PC gaming options like the Steam Machine and Microsoft’s plans to make Xbox more open.

I’ve been hearing some chatter lately that the company might be focusing less on PC gaming, but honestly, I’ll believe it when I see it. It all comes down to what they actually do with their future releases.

Currently, if these predictions hold true, bringing Steam to PlayStation seems like a positive addition for Sony, but it won’t be a game-changer on its own.
