Sony Has Reportedly Scrapped Promising Spider-Man Spinoff With Star Director

There’s been talk today about the collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios, with reports suggesting Sony may be more flexible about letting Spider-Man characters appear in Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Beyond that, Sony has also decided to cancel a planned Spider-Man spin-off movie, despite it having a well-known director attached.

Several Spider-Man spin-off movies were once in development, and a Spider-Woman film directed by Olivia Wilde was a strong possibility. However, according to a new report from DanielRPK, that project is no longer moving forward, meaning we won’t be seeing Spider-Woman on the big screen for now.

Everything We Know About The Cancelled Spider-Woman Movie

Before the movies Madame Web and Kraven were cancelled, Sony was also developing a secret project with Olivia Wilde. Although she didn’t officially say what it was about, she mentioned collaborating with Marvel, and many believed it would have featured Spider-Woman.

I was really intrigued by the Spider-Woman project, but honestly, they were keeping us guessing about which Spider-Woman it would be! They mentioned both Jessica Drew and Julia Carpenter as possibilities. For me, Jessica just felt right, though. Her wit and dry humor seemed like a perfect match for Olivia Wilde, especially after how brilliantly she handled the comedy in Booksmart. It felt like a natural fit.

Although no information about her role was ever publicly revealed, Olivia Wilde confirmed in a 2022 Variety interview that she was working on a Marvel project. When asked about it, she playfully refused to share any details, saying she couldn’t say a word and jokingly suggested she needed to hide!

Wilde expressed her enthusiasm for Marvel’s strategy of giving new directors the opportunity to work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, calling it “incredibly exciting” and saying she’s a “big fan” of their approach. While she wouldn’t directly confirm any specific involvement on her part, she playfully added that it “would be cool” if she were involved.

Following the release of her film Don’t Worry Darling, there wasn’t much news about the Spider-Woman project, but it hadn’t been cancelled either. With recent reports suggesting Sony is now more willing to share its characters with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (outside of Spider-Man), bringing Spider-Woman into the MCU seems like a logical next step, as she would be a great fit for the universe.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
