Sony Is Officially Rebooting Its Spider-Man Spinoff Plans

During the peak of superhero movie popularity in the late 2010s, Sony tried to benefit from the trend in an unusual way. Even though the newest Spider-Man movies were being made as part of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony started its own series of films, later known as Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. However, these films didn’t actually focus on Spider-Man himself. Instead, they starred characters connected to Spider-Man, like Venom and Kraven the Hunter, with limited success. After the 2024 film Kraven the Hunter performed poorly, Sony paused plans for more spin-off movies, but they still intend to develop projects based on these characters in the future.

Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman recently discussed the future of their Spider-Man movies on the podcast The Town. When asked about potentially revisiting the interconnected Spider-Verse storyline, he confirmed they plan to do so, but with a complete reboot. This means a fresh start with a brand new cast and no connections to previous films. Rothman didn’t share many specifics about the project.

Spider-Noir Could Pave the Way Forward for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

It’s no surprise Sony is planning a fresh start for its Spider-Man Universe movies. Out of the six films Sony has released so far, only the Venom trilogy made a significant amount of money at the box office – though they weren’t critically acclaimed. Even the Venom movies saw decreasing returns with each installment. Films like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter were major box office failures, with Kraven the Hunter earning a particularly low $61.9 million worldwide. Morbius and Madame Web both failed to reach $200 million in global earnings.

Look, the initial reaction to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe was…rough. A complete overhaul felt inevitable, and thankfully, I’m starting to see some real promise. This year, they’re betting big on the live-action series Spider-Noir, and honestly? It could be a game-changer. Nicolas Cage is playing a version of Ben Reilly, but this isn’t your typical superhero fare. The show is leaning hard into the film noir aesthetic, and the trailer was genuinely captivating. It feels like a truly fresh take on the genre, and right now, Spider-Noir is shaping up to be the most exciting Marvel TV show of the year. I’m cautiously optimistic, but this could be exactly what the SSU needed.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) might find success by focusing on different versions of Spider-Man instead of solely using villains from Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery. This approach would address a key criticism of their earlier films – the lack of Spider-Man himself – and also set them apart from the current Spider-Man stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The popularity of the animated Spider-Verse movies proves there are plenty of interesting Spider-Man variations to explore, and the brand is strong enough to support them.

For Sony’s Spider-Man Universe to succeed, they need to build on what worked with Spider-Noir. Early marketing is getting a good reaction because it feels different and exciting compared to the many other superhero projects out there. The key is to tailor the style to each Spider-Man character – the classic noir vibe was ideal for Spider-Noir, while a Spider-Punk movie would thrive with a fast-paced, rebellious energy inspired by punk rock. It’s still very early days for the reboot, so we likely won’t see concrete plans revealed for a while, but Sony seems to be on the right track.
