Sony recently filed a patent for an AI helper that could offer helpful tips and advice during gameplay, adapting to what’s happening in the game.
Sony patented an interesting idea back in April 2025, first highlighted by Boing Boing: an AI companion that acts like a “ghost” within games. This AI can assist players by demonstrating how to overcome obstacles, offering helpful tips, or even completing actions automatically.
So, I read about this new AI assistant they’re working on, and it’s pretty cool. Basically, it learns how to play games by watching other people play – like, tons of playthroughs, YouTube videos, and even Twitch streams. It uses all that footage to figure out what’s happening in different situations within the game, so it can understand exactly what’s going on and help me out.
If you turn on the AI assistant, it could appear in the game as a ghostly character. It can then help you by showing you what to do next, displaying the buttons you need to press, chatting with you normally, or even playing parts of the game for you.
This feature aims to help players who are struggling with a game, allowing them to finish it instead of giving up.
While an AI assistant like this could help make things more accessible, some people worry it might make challenges too easy or even become overly invasive.
This is currently just a patent, so it’s more of an idea than a finished product and might not ever be developed.
We’re curious to know what you think! Would you find it helpful to have an AI assistant within the game that offers tutorials based on what you’re doing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
