Sony: PS Plus Gets ‘Four to Six’ Day One Games Per Year – And the Focus Is on Indies

Compared to Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus usually doesn’t offer many new releases on the day they come out, no matter which subscription plan you choose.

PS Plus Essential is the most affordable option and mainly offers older games to download. PS Plus Extra costs more and gives you access to a big library of past titles. The priciest tier, PS Plus Premium, focuses on streaming games and classic retro titles.

Some recent examples of day one games have included Stray and Blue Prince.

In a recent interview with The Game Business, Chris Svensson, a key executive at Sony, confirmed that the company continues to plan on adding new games to its subscription service.

He said:

We rarely release games on the day they come out. We mostly do this for independent developers, and we typically focus on around four to six such releases each year.

For a long time, many gamers urged Sony to create a service similar to Xbox Game Pass, wanting access to new first-party and third-party games as soon as they were released.

After failing to reach the number of subscribers Microsoft hoped for, and increasing the price to $30 last year, interest in the topic has died down.

So, Xbox Game Pass just got a price cut, which is awesome! But they took Call of Duty off the service to do it. Apparently, keeping CoD on Game Pass was costing them around $300 million, so I guess they decided it wasn’t worth it in the long run.

During the interview, Svensson explained that Sony hand-picks the games offered with PS Plus, but he didn’t specify exactly what criteria they use. He did emphasize that developers need to make sure Sony is aware of their games to get the visibility they need.
