Based on reports, Sony Interactive Entertainment is considered one of the top gaming companies to work for in Japan.
This conclusion comes from employee satisfaction data gathered by OpenMoney, as reported by Automaton.
The data shows three key things: people’s average yearly income, how much overtime they work each month on average, and a satisfaction score out of five.
Sony performed best in pay and work-life balance, offering higher salaries with less overtime compared to other companies. While employee satisfaction was slightly lower than at Bandai Namco, this difference was minimal and outweighed by Sony’s better compensation and overtime record.
PlayStation outperformed all other major game companies, including Bandai Namco, Capcom, Konami, Nintendo, SEGA, and Square Enix.
For reference, the rankings shake out like so, with Automaton providing the $ conversions:
| Company | Average Yearly Income | Average Monthly Overtime | Satisfaction (1-5, with 5 being highest) |
| Sony Interactive Entertainment | 9.94 million JPY (about $63k USD) | 17.6h | 3.85 |
| Capcom | 8.40 million JPY (about $53k USD) | 20h | 3.83 |
| SEGA | 8.10 million JPY (about $51k USD) | 23.5h | 3.52 |
| Bandai Namco Entertainment | 7.95 million JPY (about $50k USD) | 28.3h | 3.89 |
| Nintendo | 7.64 million JPY (about $48k USD) | 27.2h | 3.48 |
| Konami Digital Entertainment | 7.11 million JPY (about $45k USD) | 24.2h | 2.83 |
| Square Enix | 6.87 million JPY (about $43k USD) | 19.0h | 2.77 |
It’s noteworthy that none of these companies achieved a satisfaction rating of 4 out of 5, likely indicating a broader issue with employee happiness in Japan.
Looking at it from the outside, Japan’s video game industry appears to be doing better than the industry in the West, where we constantly hear about job losses and projects being stopped.
However, that clear difference isn’t the whole story. In Japan, layoffs aren’t often publicly announced due to cultural norms and social expectations, even though many companies have reduced their staff in recent years.
Generally, Sony seems to be performing well in Japan, especially when compared to its biggest rivals.
