The visual effects industry has suffered a setback with Sony’s announcement that it’s closing Pixomondo, a prominent VFX company. Pixomondo was key in creating the dragons featured in HBO’s Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
It’s still not completely clear exactly how Pixomondo is shutting down. While Sony is taking on some of Pixomondo’s employees and work, the closure will likely also result in job losses.
Pixomondo is finishing all current projects before closing its doors. This includes the end of its Clara virtual production service, although Sony is considering taking over some of its features.
Pixomondo started as a company in Pfungstadt, Germany in 2001 and has grown to include studios in seven cities around the world: Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and London.
In 2019, the studio employed over 655 people at all its sites. Sony fully bought the company in October 2022. Johnny Snow, who had been CEO since 2019, left his position a few months later.
Pixomondo is an award-winning visual effects studio, recognized with both Oscars and BAFTAs. Their impressive work includes popular projects like HBO’s Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, as well as films such as Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, John Wick: Chapter 4, Alien: Earth, Halo, The Boys, and The Penguin.
Why is Sony Shutting Down Pixomondo?
I was really surprised to hear Sony is closing Pixomondo, and honestly, they haven’t explained why. It seems like a lot of entertainment companies have been making cuts lately with everything going on in the world financially. It’s a shame, and I’m hearing it will impact several hundred people’s jobs.
Closing the studio and handling key tasks internally is probably Sony’s way of cutting costs. It also shows that fewer big-budget film and TV projects, especially those with expensive visual effects, are being approved as studios adjust to the current economic challenges. A good example of this trend is HBO’s newest Game of Thrones prequel.
Pixomondo’s Head of Training, Joe Raasch, recently shared that PXO, despite being a mid-sized studio, consistently delivered work that exceeded expectations. He praised the studio’s talented artists, saying they would be valuable additions to any team, and expressed his admiration for the impressive results they achieved with limited resources.
Nathan Bazley, Global Director of Business & Operations at NantStudios, explained that Sony relied on its PXO VP team to continuously develop professional products designed to complement their popular hardware. However, he noted that the demand for these new products was limited, and the potential market wasn’t large enough. As a result, despite the team’s efforts in innovation and development, the products ultimately didn’t achieve significant success in the market.
