Sony Steps Up Fraud Prevention After Major PS5 Security Vulnerabilities Exposed

Recently, I wrote about significant security flaws in the PS5 that have resulted in some PlayStation users losing access to their accounts.

According to Colin Moriarty of the Sacred Symbols podcast, weak customer service at PlayStation Network (PSN) has allowed hackers to take over user accounts. They’re doing this with just a small amount of easily accessible information, such as an email address and the date of a purchase.

But it seems like Sony may be taking the problem seriously.

A Twitter user named PorkPoncho noticed that PlayStation is hiring Senior Fraud Strategists for its offices in both San Mateo and London.

We’re looking for people who are dedicated to keeping our players and platforms safe from fraud and harmful activity.

Here’s what the full listing says:

I’m really excited about this Senior Fraud Strategist role! From what I understand, I’d be a key player in fighting fraud, using my knowledge to build and implement strategies. I’d get to lead projects focused on preventing fraud and work with lots of different teams – product, engineering, data science, and even external partners – to spot risks, create effective solutions that can grow with the company, and ultimately make a real difference in protecting everyone.

Sony is seeking experienced professionals – they require at least eight years in the field. This shows they’re looking for someone who can quickly become productive and make an immediate impact.

They may have been planning to hire for this role all along, but the timing looks suspicious, especially given the recent news about those social engineering scams.

Ultimately, the company really shouldn’t have faced this problem, but I’m optimistic they’ll quickly hire the necessary staff and start making PlayStation Network a safer and more secure place.

As a PlayStation fan, I’m really hoping Sony prioritizes the security of our accounts. We all have so much invested – both money and years of gaming memories – and it’s crucial they keep everything safe.
