Sony Sues Tencent Over ‘Shameless’ Horizon Copycat Coming to PS5

There’s paying homage and then there’s just outright copying.

It appears that Sony’s legal department believes that Light of Mirage has stepped over a boundary, and they are taking Tencent to court over what they consider a “faithful” copy of the Horizon series.

Reuters reports that the company behind the platform has taken legal action against a copycat version on July 25th, claiming both copyright and trademark violations. The aim of this lawsuit is to halt the release of the game.

The lawsuit alleges that Tencent’s duplication of Horizon is so obvious that it has been labeled as ‘outrageous’, ‘unbelievable’, and ‘shameless‘ by the general public.

It’s reported by Gamespot that Tencent proposed purchasing the rights to Horizon (IP), an offer which was swiftly turned down by the company controlling the platform.

The legal claim asserts that Tencent is deceiving customers by making them think Light of Motiram is an upcoming official sequel to Horizon, resulting in significant harm. They are seeking compensation amounting to $150,000 and access to all related materials of Light of Motiram to destroy them.

This new release is marketed as having a stronger focus on survival compared to Guerrilla’s previous projects, but the advertising art for it is quite similar and hard to tell apart.

It’s intriguing to watch how things unfold in this situation, particularly considering the lingering legal disputes between Nintendo and Palworld. Notably, Palworld has adjusted their game in a bid to address Nintendo, who owns the rights to Pokémon.
