If you’ve been using the PlayStation Store for more than ten years, chances are you might recall that back in the day, you could buy custom avatars for your PS3 account.
Originally, this feature allowed you to customize your profile picture only after a replacement with the option to choose any image came along. However, support for the original PlayStation Network avatars, also known as classic ones, persists. Occasionally, Sony provides redemption codes for free classic avatars, such as those given out during Ghost of Tsushima’s anniversary event.
I myself, being a fan, came across some instances where fellow enthusiasts were concerned about their old PS3 avatars disappearing. Intrigued, I decided to investigate the matter personally. Indeed, after a quick check, it appears that their concern was valid.
Back then, we purchased several avatar characters for the PS3, such as Kung-Fu Rider (do you recall that one?) and PAIN. However, we’re having trouble locating these specific ones in the Premium Avatars section on our PS5.
There are still many avatar options available for us, and we hadn’t contemplated changing the Demon Slayer one in the first place. However, it’s intriguing to notice that those old profile pictures are being phased out.
If you’re currently utilizing a pre-purchased PlayStation 3 character (avatar), it should function as expected. However, be cautious about modifying it, as there’s a high probability that you may encounter issues with accessing it in the future.
It seems unlikely that this is malicious behavior, instead, it might be due to the aging structure of the PS3. Regardless, we won’t make a big fuss over losing a JPG purchased more than 15 years ago for just a few cents.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed some folks are still rocking their old PS3 avatars, but it seems that mine and possibly others have mysteriously vanished for now. Fingers crossed, it’s just a temporary glitch!
