Sony’s Disastrous First-Party Leadership Culminates in Yet Another Studio Closure

Things aren’t looking good for video games, and Sony’s management of its game development studios has suffered another setback.

Dark Outlaw Games, a studio founded by former Treyarch developer Jason Blundell and publicly announced last year, has closed down without ever releasing a game.

As many of you may remember, this studio in Los Angeles grew out of Deviation Games. Deviation Games previously worked with PlayStation on a project, but the studio was shut down a few years ago.

This marks another disappointing choice for Sony, continuing a ten-year pattern of buying studios only to close them down, with Bluepoint Games being the latest example.

It’s not surprising that people aren’t upset about Dark Outlaw Games shutting down, since we never knew what projects they were working on. However, it adds to a pattern of trouble for PlayStation’s internal studios during the PS5’s lifespan.

Trevor Blundell is famous for his work on Call of Duty Zombies, suggesting his new studio, Dark Outlaw Games, was probably developing a first-person shooter. Previously, Deviation Games was working on a science fiction game.

PlayStation will also be reducing staff in the US and Europe, though the number of affected employees is relatively small.

The company is scaling back its involvement in mobile gaming, but will continue to support games it has already announced, including MLB The Show Mobile and Horizon Steel Frontiers.

Sony has long wanted a piece of the mobile gaming market, but hasn’t released any successful games so far. They are currently testing a game called Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble in a few areas, but early signs aren’t very promising.

The company has gone through several top-level executives, including many it recruited from prominent roles at companies like Apple. Now, it’s shifting its investment focus.
