As a gamer, I’ve noticed a pattern with pretty much every game I play – even the ones that are constantly updated. They usually start out super strong, with tons of players, but eventually, things start to slow down and the hype dies off. It’s just the way things go, sadly.
We’re not presenting anything new or groundbreaking. This is a common trend that most people recognize, and Steam’s publicly shared data consistently demonstrates it.
It’s perfectly normal for games to have a burst of popularity when they launch, then gradually become less played over time. While truly great games stay popular for longer, even those eventually see a decline in players.
Gran Turismo 7, the newest game in the popular Gran Turismo racing series, is proving that traditional expectations for the gaming industry don’t always hold true.
Kazunori Yamauchi, head of the Gran Turismo series, announced today at the Gran Turismo World Series 2025 World Finals in Fukuoka that the game currently has a remarkable two million players active each month, with the player base continuing to grow.
He said, as reported by GT Planet:
Despite being released several years ago, Gran Turismo 7 continues to be incredibly popular, with over 2 million active players and a growing number of newcomers. This makes it the most successful title in the Gran Turismo series to date – a level of sustained engagement neither we nor PlayStation have seen before.
Yamauchi noted that the game has been offered at a discount before, but never at a really low price. Also, it hasn’t been included with a subscription service like PlayStation Plus.
He believes the game remains popular because Polyphony Digital consistently updates and supports it after release, a practice they began with GT Sport on the PlayStation 4.
As a huge GT 7 fan, I was so excited to hear they’re celebrating 100 million series sales with the new Spec 3 update! It’s awesome that it comes with a bunch of free content. And if you want even more, they’ve also released a Power Pack expansion that really adds to all the things you can do in the game.
Gran Turismo has a dedicated fanbase, which sometimes means it doesn’t receive the same attention as other major PlayStation franchises. However, it consistently demonstrates its value as one of Sony’s strongest and most significant games.
We expect GT 7 to remain very popular for the rest of the PlayStation 5’s lifespan.
