As a PlayStation fan, I’ve been really excited to hear about Sony’s work on their Spectral Super Resolution tech – it’s only on the PS5 Pro right now, but it sounds amazing. There’s been a lot of talk about how they’re improving it, and it looks like we’re getting a peek behind the curtain! A new patent filed way back in July 2025 just got published on February 4th, and it details a way to create super high-resolution images using multiple frames. Basically, it shows how they’re making the tech even better!
MFSR is a technology that uses artificial intelligence to improve the visual quality of games. It takes the game’s graphics data and creates a sharper, higher-resolution image. Importantly, MFSR also tracks how much effort the console is using and automatically adjusts settings to maintain the best possible picture quality while keeping the game running smoothly.
Okay, so Sony’s basically admitting that upscaling tech – things like DLSS and FSR – isn’t perfect. I’ve definitely noticed it struggle when my PC is really being pushed in a game. They say you can try to fix it with dynamic resolution, but honestly, that just creates new problems. It can make the game even more demanding and sometimes ends up looking blurrier, which is super annoying.
This invention improves performance when creating high-resolution graphics in games by automatically adjusting the accuracy of calculations. It does this by dynamically changing the precision of the data used, like weights and activations. If the processing unit is heavily used, the calculation accuracy is lowered to speed things up, and vice versa. This optimizes both memory usage and processing time based on how hard the system is working during gameplay.
This patent description confirms earlier reports from December that PSSR 2 isn’t just a small improvement. The technology, called Multi-Frame Super Resolution 2 (MFSR2), uses a significantly updated algorithm. It’s also designed to require less input data, which should lighten processing demands and reduce memory usage. According to one developer who wished to remain unnamed, this is a major upgrade, not a minor one.
A developer pointed out that AMD and Sony are treating PSSR, FSR 3, and FSR 4 as separate technologies. Although the PS5 Pro will likely receive several upgrades based on FSR 4, an improved version of PSSR (PSSR 2) is expected to be released as a separate update at a later time.
AMD and Sony have been collaborating on new technologies. Mark Cerny, the lead architect for both the PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro, explained that the biggest challenge is integrating these new systems – like FSR and PSSR – without significantly increasing the hardware’s workload.
According to Cerny, the real difficulty isn’t creating these technologies, but actually making them work well. Technologies like FSR and PSSR use complex neural networks that put a huge strain on graphics cards. They need a lot of processing power and fast access to a large amount of memory, and that clashes with how graphics cards are designed.
