The story behind Spider-Man movies is a little complicated for fans. While Spider-Man and related characters are owned by Sony, they’ve teamed up with Marvel Studios. After Sony’s earlier Spider-Man films didn’t quite succeed, they partnered with Marvel to bring a new Peter Parker – played by Tom Holland – into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, Spider-Man appears in both movies made and distributed by Sony, and in the broader Disney-owned MCU projects.
In addition to the main Spider-Man films, Sony created a series of movies focusing on other characters from the Spider-Man world. While the Venom trilogy with Tom Hardy did reasonably well, other films like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter were significant critical and commercial disappointments. Because of this, Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman announced on The Town podcast that any future projects within the Spider-Man universe will be completely restarted.
Most fans of the Spider-Man Universe (SSU) probably think it needs a fresh start, if it continues at all. But if Sony really wants to make more Spider-Man-related movies, they need to understand one key thing if they hope to succeed.
A Spider-Man Universe Without Spider-Man Just Doesn’t Make Sense
The recent Spider-Man movies had several issues, and the studio needs to make significant changes for future installments. The biggest problem, though, is that Spider-Man himself wasn’t prominently featured enough. While he’s an incredibly popular character, simply including the name isn’t enough – he needs to be a central part of the story to really succeed. As we’ve seen with Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Spider-Verse films, more Spider-People actually make the movies even better!
Sony understood Spider-Man’s importance to their cinematic universe, and continued to build stories around him even when he wasn’t on screen. However, this approach ultimately weakened their films. Characters who were defined by their connection to Spider-Man naturally wanted to challenge him, but despite repeated hints, a showdown with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man never materialized. The potential fight between Spider-Man and Venom, teased after the credits of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, was ultimately turned into a brief, comedic moment in No Way Home.
Audiences have lost patience for the current state of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Any attempt to revive it absolutely needs to include Spider-Man. Luckily, recent multiverse movies have already gotten viewers used to seeing different versions of Spider-Man, so Sony can move forward with its own projects, even after Tom Holland’s time in the MCU. They could bring back Andrew Garfield, cast a new Peter Parker, or even introduce Spider-Gwen or Miles Morales in live-action films. The key is to also improve the quality of these new movies, and then the possibilities are endless.
