Sorry, but Now There’s More Bad News for Paramount+ Subscribers

Paramount+ still has a good selection of movies and shows, recently adding films like the 21 Jump Street movies. However, there’s been some disappointing news for subscribers. Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the popular Yellowstone and its spin-offs, is leaving the platform, meaning no new shows from him will be available there. And now, Paramount+ is raising its prices, which is another setback for users.

Paramount+ is raising prices for both its monthly and yearly subscriptions, starting January 15, 2026. CEO David Ellison announced the changes in a letter to shareholders, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. See the new pricing details below.

  • Essential (with ads): $8.99/month
  • Premium (no ads): $13.99/month
  • Annual Essential (with ads): $89.99/year
  • Annual Premium (no ads): $139.99/year

Paramount+ Price Hikes Come at a Bad Time

Raising subscription prices is never popular with viewers, but Paramount+’s recent announcement feels particularly badly timed. While Taylor Sheridan has a contract with Paramount through 2028, his eventual departure is a significant loss for the studio, leaving a big gap to fill. He’s the creative force behind the hugely successful Yellowstone and also develops shows like The Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman. Even if Sheridan were still staying with Paramount, a price hike would upset subscribers, but the news of his upcoming exit makes it even harder to accept.

Paramount now faces the challenge of justifying the cost of acquiring the Duffer brothers. Although streaming services have a lot of older shows and movies, original series are what really attract viewers, and Paramount is losing a major source of that content. While the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, could potentially create new shows for Paramount, they’re moving to focus on making films instead. This means Paramount might need to find other sources for new TV series.

Following the merger of Skydance and Paramount, the studio has made it clear that Star Trek is a key focus for the future. They want to better connect the storylines and characters between the Star Trek movies and TV shows. While specific plans are still under wraps, the new Star Trek movie currently in development – which will start a fresh storyline separate from the previous films – could be the first step towards a larger range of Star Trek content, including more TV series. Since Paramount+ already hosts several Star Trek shows, we can expect continued development of shows for that streaming service as well.

If Paramount continues to produce great shows, people will be willing to pay for the streaming service. Luckily, they still have Taylor Sheridan creating content for at least a couple more years, giving them time to plan a strong lineup that will keep Paramount+ subscribers engaged. While some in the industry are saying streaming is failing, it will likely remain a key part of television for a long time, and we hope Paramount+ stays committed to producing excellent TV.
