Do you remember how excited everyone got with each new Avengers movie announcement? That buzz died down a bit after Avengers: Endgame, but it’s returning as Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars get closer. It’s more than just interest – Marvel fans automatically anticipate a reboot, an epic scope, a huge cast (which we’ll definitely get), ties to past movies, and the sense that something truly special is coming. Doomsday has some of that anticipation already, but Secret Wars is taking it to a whole new level. What’s making everyone so hyped about Secret Wars in particular?
Ever since this movie was announced, it’s felt like the big one for the Multiverse Saga. Seriously, it’s promising to bring together so many different versions of our favorite characters and even combine different Marvel franchises – and finally answer a ton of questions that have been hanging around for years! The excitement is totally understandable. It’s shaping up to be a huge visual treat and I’m expecting it to break all sorts of box office records. But as someone who’s been reading Marvel comics and loving these characters for decades, I’m a little worried it might not deliver the same emotional impact as the source material. That’s what I’m really hoping for, but I’m a bit concerned it might be missing that key element.
Avengers: Secret Wars Won’t Be Able to Deliver the Essence of Its Story
The core of Marvel’s Secret Wars isn’t about the destruction of the multiverse or the setting of Battleworld—it’s the long-standing conflict between Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and Doctor Doom. Their rivalry isn’t new; these two brilliant minds have a history stretching back to their university days. It’s a clash of ideologies: Reed champions selfless science, teamwork, and optimism, while Doom is driven by a desire for total control and a need to prove he’s the best. This deep-rooted tension is what makes the events on Battleworld meaningful, and without it, the entire story wouldn’t work.
The Russo brothers, who directed several Marvel films, have stated that the upcoming Secret Wars movie won’t solely rely on the more recent comic book version by Jonathan Hickman. Instead, the film will draw inspiration from both that modern storyline and the original Secret Wars series from 1984, while also incorporating the directors’ own creative ideas.
When people think about Secret Wars, they often remember the intense mental and emotional struggles from Jonathan Hickman’s story. That’s where Doctor Doom gains the Beyonder’s power and becomes God Emperor Doom, taking control of Battleworld. Even though Reed Richards has lived through the destruction of entire universes, he doesn’t rely on powers alone – he challenges Doom’s beliefs, which center around total control. Their final confrontation is less about a physical fight and more about a clash of ideologies, highlighting that Doom and Reed have fundamentally different ideas about how to rebuild the world.
Let’s consider the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reed Richards has only recently been introduced in Fantastic Four: First Steps and hasn’t had much time to develop as a character. Doctor Doom is also being introduced, but as a mysterious figure with no existing history with Reed. They don’t have any established conflict or deep-rooted animosity. Before the Fantastic Four movie, many fans predicted Doom would at least be mentioned, but he only appeared briefly in a post-credits scene, which is acceptable. Secret Wars could still pit Reed and Doom against each other, but the impact won’t be as strong because their rivalry hasn’t been developed for the audience. Is that a problem?
Avengers: Secret Wars Has All the Ingredients to Be Spectacular, but Not Perfect
This new Avengers movie has all the ingredients for success – it promises incredible action, a potentially groundbreaking take on the multiverse, and unforgettable scenes. However, it seems likely to lack the emotional depth of the original comic book story. The source material, Secret Wars, centers around a philosophical conflict between two characters with opposing worldviews, which provides its core meaning. Without that central theme, the movie might end up feeling like just a collection of exciting moments for fans, without a truly compelling heart.
It’s possible the Marvel Cinematic Universe is setting up a new conflict involving the Fantastic Four, since Doctor Doom recently interacted with Franklin Richards. Perhaps Doom isn’t currently rivals with Reed Richards, but is instead pursuing Franklin for his own purposes. Given Franklin’s importance in the comics, this interaction could lead to a future feud. Alternatively, the storyline might use flashbacks to establish a history between the characters, but it remains to be seen if that approach will be as compelling.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe excels at big action sequences, but its most impactful stories usually come from relationships and storylines that develop over time. The conflict between Iron Man and Captain America in Civil War felt significant because audiences had seen their connection evolve since 2012. Similarly, Thanos became a compelling villain through years of careful development. However, the dynamic between Reed Richards and Doctor Doom lacks that history. Trying to create decades of complex backstory in just a couple of movies won’t work – the emotional impact won’t be the same because audiences haven’t had the chance to truly connect with their rivalry. While there’s a lot to look forward to in future Avengers films, this crucial element is missing.
The upcoming Secret Wars movie has the potential to be amazing, and there’s a lot leading up to its release. However, without the central conflict between Reed Richards and Doctor Doom, the film won’t fully capture the heart of the original comic book story. It can still be enjoyable, but it won’t have the same impact that has made Secret Wars so beloved for over fifty years, and that’s a real disappointment.
Avengers: Secret Wars hits theaters on December 17, 2027.
