Sorry, You’ll Probably Have To Wait Until Spider-Man 5 for the Dream Villain Face-Off

The enigma surrounding the comic book series, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” is palpable. After a long break, Peter Parker is gearing up for another round of adventures. The upcoming Spider-Man solo movie will feature two powerful characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the Punisher and the Hulk. While their specific roles in the story are still uncertain, it’s clear that they will join forces with Spider-Man. However, unseen adversaries are expected to create conflict among the heroes. As of now, the primary antagonist for “Brand New Day” remains a mystery.

In a departure from his decade-long absence, the Scorpion is set to rejoin the franchise, but don’t expect him to be the main antagonist. Instead, the character that might push Hulk towards his primal nature remains a mystery, with the intention of keeping at least one surprise until the movie hits theaters. Conversely, there’s no sign of a showdown between this mysterious villain and Spider-Man before Spider-Man 5 at the earliest.

Kingpin Is Sitting Out Another Spider-Man Movie

In the comic books, although Kingpin is predominantly known as Daredevil’s adversary, he has a substantial history with Spider-Man too. Since New York City is Kingpin’s home base and anyone involved in illicit activities there is likely to catch Peter Parker’s attention, their rivalry develops significantly. At one point, Kingpin even hires a sniper to harm Aunt May, which leads to the “One More Day” storyline where Spider-Man strikes a deal with Mephisto. There’s speculation that the upcoming comic series “Brand New Day” may reference this plot due to Kingpin’s recent appearance in “Ironheart” within the MCU. However, such references might diminish Kingpin’s role in the storyline. Actor Vincent D’Onofrio has stated he won’t appear in the next Spider-Man movie, citing rights issues as a major hurdle preventing his character from transitioning to the big screen.

Currently, it’s not so much about preventing Kingpin from encountering Spider-Man, as both characters have numerous challenges to handle. Peter Parker will soon engage in a battle with a former Avenger, while Fisk is diligently serving as the Mayor of New York City, targeting vigilantes and confronting his age-old adversary, Matt Murdock. The second season of “Daredevil: Born Again” is set to resume shortly after the events of the first season, with Daredevil mobilizing an army for retaliation. Although it would’ve been thrilling to see Spider-Man fighting alongside Daredevil, the show is opting for a more subdued approach, reintroducing Jessica Jones from the Netflix universe. However, even though Kingpin and Spider-Man are currently avoiding each other, it doesn’t mean that their potential confrontation within the MCU should be ruled out entirely.

The MCU Needs to Get Better About Bringing New York City-Based Characters Together

One significant concern arising from Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5 is the apparent disconnect between stories. In contrast to the early years when events in one hero’s story would instantly impact another, there seems to be a deliberate avoidance of addressing major plot twists to prevent audience confusion. However, this new approach appears to be affecting viewership, as it seems unusual that the upcoming movie, Thunderbolts, didn’t acknowledge Wilson Fisk becoming NYC mayor when the film’s third act is set in the city. The crime-ridden streets of New York City, as depicted in Born Again, should have been a major concern for civilians, but they walk around casually while Yelena Belova and her team fight, as if it were an ordinary day.

In a potential new development, it’s exciting to imagine that Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) might introduce the character Kingpin into a Spider-Man film. While he may not be the primary antagonist, his presence and actions should certainly be acknowledged given his dislike for Spider-Man’s vigilante methods. This move could also facilitate the long-awaited on-screen collaboration between Spider-Man and Daredevil, a pairing that fans have been eager to see since Matt Murdock represented Peter Parker in court during “Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
