Since returning to Comedy Central this summer, seasons 27 and 28 of South Park have largely revolved around Donald Trump and his actions. This focus has created some division among viewers, as the show’s usual storylines about Stan and his friends have taken a backseat. However, in a recent interview with The New York Times, the show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, confirmed that Trump will continue to be featured in upcoming episodes.
Why South Park Focused So Much on Trump
I’ve been wondering why South Park started focusing so much on Trump, and the creators, Parker and Stone, had a pretty insightful explanation. Parker said it wasn’t that they tried to get political, but rather that politics just became pop culture. Stone added that they have a knack for finding where the new boundaries are – he jokingly compared it to being drawn to honey. Basically, they noticed where the taboo topics were and decided to explore them. They felt that first episode, tackling Trump head-on, was a way to immediately show they weren’t afraid to do their own thing.
Stone explained that initially, he and Parker expected their Trump-based comedy to be a one-time thing. However, they discovered a surprisingly rich source of humor and decided to continue developing it. Parker described their creative process as starting with a single idea and letting it evolve organically. They aim to satirize all extremes, having previously done so with ‘woke’ culture, finding both topics equally funny and ripe for parody.
Why South Park Won’t Be Getting Rid of Trump Yet
I heard Parker talking about how they’ve been wanting to go back to making episodes more like the old days, the kind fans have been asking for. But he said it’s been tough. He feels like politics is everywhere you look – not just from the government itself, but also all over social media, with podcasts, TikTok, YouTube… it’s become so ingrained in pop culture that it’s more than just political now, it’s just part of everything.
According to Parker, fans have been asking about a revival of the show, but the creators aren’t ready to move on from political storylines, particularly those involving Trump. They’re optimistic that things could change with the next season of South Park. Parker mentioned, “Next year will be different,” adding that their show is expected to outlast the current focus of attention, so they’re continuing with their current approach for now.
