Team America is embarking on a new adventure: bringing its unique brand of comedy to streaming audiences. The 2004 film has found a new home on Paramount+.
Trey Parker directed the film, writing the script with his frequent collaborator Matt Stone (from South Park) and Pam Brady. It will be released on February 1st. You can currently buy or rent Team America: World Police on platforms like YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
A new, adult-themed comedy is coming to the streaming service that hosts South Park, along with several other well-known movies. These include comedies like A Night at the Roxbury, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and Bad News Bears, all expected to be available to stream next month.
Team America: World Police, starring Trey Parker and Matt Stone in several characters, follows a counterterrorism team as they try to stop a dangerous plot by North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
Despite initially disappointing at the box office – earning just $51 million with a $32 million budget – the movie gained a dedicated following and remains a beloved animated film. Audiences clearly enjoyed it, giving it an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics gave it a 77% rating. Some reviewers found the humor wasn’t as strong as South Park, but many others appreciated the film’s cleverness and satirical take on current events.
Team America: World Police Has Several Famous Fans
Look, as a critic, I’m not surprised Team America: World Police has become a cult favorite, but it’s really cool to see even big stars admit it’s brilliant. I recently read that Jodie Foster actually called it her number one film in an interview last year – 2023, to be exact. It’s not just us movie folks who ‘get’ Parker and Stone’s unique brand of humor; celebrities are fans too!
When asked what movie everyone should see, the Oscar-winning actor said their sense of humor is a key part of what they enjoy, and admitted it’s a pretty silly one. They recommended both Everything Everywhere All at Once and Team America: World Police, praising the latter for its ridiculous and funny jokes.
The actor explained that even during very intense scenes, they enjoy sharing a laugh with their fellow performers. They find humor can even be found in the most serious moments.
Foster was right about the movie. Another director has also shared their positive feelings about it, saying they watched it “five or six times” while it was in theaters. The director explained that everyone was hesitant to be mentioned in the movie because it humorously criticized so many people, but they were personally pleased with how it referenced their own previous work.
The actor remembered feeling proud when the movie Team America used the same song, “Battle Without Honor or Humanity,” that was famous from Kill Bill: Volume 1. He said, “When Team America plays that music, it makes me realize I’m the only person in town who’s been given a respectful nod in that movie.”
Team America: World Police will be available to stream on Paramount+ on Feb. 1.
