South Park Season 27 Announces Historic New Episode Schedule

Over the past few years, South Park has shifted from a regular annual schedule with full seasons, to airing fewer specials and shorter seasons, partly due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes. However, since the premiere of Season 27, the show has been addressing current issues more frequently. Now, there are plans for a return to more frequent annual releases, aiming to produce new seasons all the way up to Season 31 by the year 2030.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve noticed that in the initial episodes of Season 27, the show has cleverly woven in references to contemporary political happenings and personalities. For instance, they’ve depicted Eric Cartman in the likeness of Charlie Kirk, and delved deep into the realms of U.S. politics, touching upon figures like Donald Trump and the backlash against ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

From a diehard movie enthusiast’s perspective, it’s been confirmed by Deadline that South Park Season 27 will maintain its peculiar weekly-off, weekly-on release rhythm throughout the entire season. This move marks a first for the show, as it adopts this schedule after more than two decades of uninterrupted broadcasting.

The eagerly anticipated Season 27 debuted on Wednesday, July 23, followed by a two-week hiatus before resuming on August 6, and more recently on August 20. For the next 10 episodes, new installments will air alternately on Sundays on Comedy Central and Paramount+.

According to the updated bi-weekly airing schedule for South Park, the 10-episode season is set to end on Wednesday, November 26.

  • Episode 1 – July 23
  • Episode 2 – August 6
  • Episode 3 – August 20
  • Episode 4 – September 3
  • Episode 5 – September 17
  • Episode 6 –  October 1
  • Episode 7 – October 15
  • Episode 8 – October 29
  • Episode 9 – November 12
  • Episode 10 – November 26

Although there might be a week or two missed occasionally, or a mid-season pause at some point, the outlet mentioned that the final episode of the 10-episode season could air as late as December 10, which is approximately two weeks beyond the initial schedule.

South Park’s Release Schedule Delay Could Benefit Show

The reason South Park has changed its airing schedule to align with its streaming platform, Paramount+, might be because they want to maintain their popular original shows for a longer period on the service. By releasing episodes simultaneously on both Paramount+ and Comedy Central, they aim to keep subscribers engaged for an extended time.

If all voice recordings for the entire season are completed, it allows creators the opportunity to incorporate current references and commentary about the most sensational real-world happenings into the subsequent episodes.

If South Park continues its annual release pattern, fans can expect Season 28 (consisting of ten episodes) around the usual time, with approximately half a year passing between seasons. This pattern may persist for several years, including Seasons 29 and 30, and the show has been renewed up to Season 31 in 2030.
