Though South Park isn’t known for keeping a strict timeline or consistent storyline, the show’s 29th season will likely need to resolve some unfinished plots from its often-discussed 2025 episodes. South Park has a very unusual release pattern compared to other long-running shows like The Simpsons. Recently, The Simpsons faced criticism from dedicated fans when it shortened its seasons from 22 episodes to between 15 and 18, including some episodes available only on Disney+.
Unlike some animated series, South Park hasn’t had a full season with more than 14 episodes since 2004, and hasn’t even reached 10 episodes per season since 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the show switched from typical 10-episode seasons to fewer, longer specials, and it hasn’t gone back to its original format. In 2025, seasons 27 and 28 were released one after the other, each with just five episodes.
Satan and Donald Trump’s Romantic “Relationship”

Surprisingly, after mostly avoiding ongoing storylines since a poorly received election-focused season in 2016, South Park fully committed to season-long arcs in seasons 27 and 28. These seasons featured a wild, over-the-top, and often shocking comedy centered around a secret relationship between the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and Satan, along with Vice President JD Vance. This led to Satan becoming pregnant with the Antichrist, but the storyline abruptly ended in the season 28 finale when the Antichrist appeared to take its own life before being born.
The season ended with a bizarre scene seemingly meant to mock the death of Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier with ties to Trump. An evil creature connected to the story died just before the finale. This leaves the complicated connection between Trump, Vance, and Satan unresolved heading into the next season. While Satan appeared to be breaking up with his manipulative partner at the end, it remains to be seen if this change will last.
Peter Thiel and ICE’s Attempted South Park Takeovers

Although Jesus resolved the main plot in the season 28 finale, bringing the Tegridy Farms storyline to a close, South Park didn’t fully address the issues of Peter Thiel and ICE’s attempts to control the town. Both the billionaire and the immigration enforcement agency tried to take over South Park in season 28 and were ultimately stopped, but it’s likely they’ll return as antagonists in future episodes.
Cartman’s Shifting Personality

Honestly, I’m really hoping season 29 finally addresses what’s been going on with Cartman. He felt totally sidelined in the season 28 finale, “Crap Out.” With Stan so focused on that wild love triangle with Satan, Trump, and Vance, there just wasn’t much room for Cartman, Kenny, or Kyle to really be in the episode. It felt off, and I’d love to see them get back to featuring Cartman more prominently – he’s such a huge part of what makes South Park great!
I have to admit, there were times in seasons 27 and 28 where I actually felt bad for Cartman. Like, seeing him get an exorcism or get taken by Thiel was surprisingly sad. But the weirdest part was when Thiel used that AI program, Sora, to make videos of Cartman saying all his old, classic lines. It totally fooled his mom into thinking he was back to his old self, and it was just… strange to see him confronted with how much he’d changed.
Since season 14, when South Park started experimenting with continuing storylines, the show has hinted at making Cartman a more complex, antihero-like character. After seasons 27 and 28 surprisingly portrayed him as someone affected by bad luck rather than actively causing trouble, season 29 could really shake things up and redefine his role in the series.
