As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve been a fanatic about Mel Brooks’ comic gem, Spaceballs, for close to four decades now. This 1987 masterpiece took aim at the iconic Star Wars trilogy with an all-star cast – the noble Lone Starr (Bill Pullman), the sinister Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), and the sagacious Yogurt, played by none other than Mel Brooks himself. A joke within the movie hinted at Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, but the franchise has mostly laid low, except for a brief animated series. After years of whispers and false alarms, Amazon MGM Studios has finally taken the plunge into developing a sequel, promising to rekindle the spark of the original while embarking on an exciting new journey through the cosmos.
Josh Gad, writer and star of Spaceballs 2, shared with Collider that the project has reached a significant milestone – they’re now in the final stages of pre-production. Three years ago, he presented the idea to Mel Brooks. Now, Gad is about to travel to Australia to start filming, making this long-awaited sequel more real than ever. In essence, it means that the Schwartz (the project) is stirring down under.
Gad stated, “We stay especially vigilant regarding [leaks], as you can imagine,” before sharing fresh insights about the storyline. “Our approach will likely be a balanced one, resembling what Mel achieved in the initial film. Given that it’s akin to a Star Wars movie, it necessitates some sweeping vistas, which we’re creating, and of course, plenty of spaceship action scenes, which we’re also working on.
Spaceballs 2 Will Tackle the Sequel Era of Star Wars
Much like the first movie poked fun at the initial Star Wars trilogy, Spaceballs 2 seems to be aiming its humor at the more recent franchise. Preliminary stories suggest that Lewis Pullman, son of original actor Bill Pullman, might join the cast as Starburst, a character who appears to be Lone Starr and Princess Vespa’s (Daphne Zuniga) offspring. Keke Palmer is also rumored to play Destiny in a significant role. The new characters seem to be at the heart of the storyline, mirroring the arrival of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a film set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, which established a new generation.
As a fan, I’m thrilled to share that Bill Pullman will once again embody Lone Starr, while Moranis and Brooks reprise their roles as Dark Helmet and Yogurt respectively. This brings back beloved characters who, much like Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke Skywalker in recent Star Wars films, are set to guide the new heroes. The return of familiar faces is also a possibility, as Tim Russ, known for his role on Star Trek: Voyager, hinted at his involvement with a social media post referencing an iconic scene from the original. The mix of old and new is further emphasized by the project’s playful title, “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two – but with Reboot Elements – Franchise Expansion Film,” demonstrating that even the rules of modern sequel-making aren’t sacred to the Schwartz.
Spaceballs 2 is eyeing a theatrical release in 2027.
