Spaceballs 2’s Most Interesting Star Wars Parody Isn’t a Movie Character or Storyline

After forty years, a sequel to Mel Brooks’ classic Star Wars parody, Spaceballs, is finally happening! A lot has changed since the original film came out. The Star Wars universe has expanded massively with prequels, sequels, spin-off movies, and numerous TV series after George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney. The team behind Spaceballs 2 has plenty of new Star Wars content to work with, so they probably won’t need to poke fun at other franchises – though they’ll likely still include jokes about popular series like Marvel.

Last year, as Spaceballs 2 was being made, fans started to get a sense of the film’s direction. The movie appears to be largely focused on parodying the Star Wars sequel trilogy, with Lewis Pullman playing Lone Starr’s son, Starburst—a clever casting choice—and Keke Palmer as Destiny, who many believe is a humorous take on Rey. While this could be very funny, the most interesting parody Spaceballs 2 could achieve isn’t about imitating specific characters or plots. It has a great chance to poke fun at Star Wars fans themselves.

Spaceballs 2 Needs to Provide Commentary On Star Wars Fandom

Since Spaceballs came out, the world of Star Wars has expanded greatly with new movies and shows becoming official parts of the story. Also, the way fans talk about Star Wars has changed a lot. This shift started with the release of the prequel trilogy, which sharply divided audiences. While younger viewers loved seeing new Star Wars films, those who grew up with the original movies were often very critical. Over time, the prequels have gained more appreciation, and that provides a lot of material for satire and parody in modern Star Wars comedies.

The strong reactions to the prequel trilogy and attempts to redeem it could fuel an entire comedy movie, but the Star Wars fanbase has become even more divided since Disney took over. While most fans agree on a few things – like enjoying Rogue One and Andor – it seems like every new Star Wars project immediately sparks criticism and disagreement. This is especially true for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is one of the most controversial blockbusters of the last ten years. Some fans loved how Rian Johnson challenged the traditional Star Wars story, while others believe the film ruined the entire sequel trilogy by going in the wrong direction. With such a popular franchise, pleasing everyone is impossible, and it feels like everything from The Acolyte to The Mandalorian and Grogu creates strong, opposing opinions.

While Spaceballs 2 shouldn’t be a harsh critique of Star Wars fans, the franchise is so popular that the movie likely needs to acknowledge the fandom in some way. It will be interesting to see how the filmmakers approach this, as commenting on fandom can be tricky. It’s important they avoid being overly critical, as that could ruin the movie. The most successful parodies are made with affection, so Spaceballs 2 should treat Star Wars fans and their opinions with respect—similar to how Galaxy Quest lovingly celebrated Star Trek fans.

The biggest challenge with a Spaceballs 2 sequel is finding the right balance. It would be a letdown if the movie just relied on easy jokes without any real satirical edge. Simply acknowledging the problems with Star Wars fandom in a self-aware scene won’t be enough. The movie needs a fresh, creative approach to the conversation that’s been happening in pop culture for years. If the filmmakers can do that, Spaceballs 2 could actually be better than the original, offering both funny parodies of Star Wars and insightful social commentary.
