When the show Spartacus: House of Ashur was announced, fans understandably wondered how it could happen, since the character Ashur was killed off at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance. Now, a preview has been released that explains how the spinoff series will work.
A new clip from Starz shows Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay) in the afterlife after his death. He comes face to face with Lucretia, played by Lucy Lawless, who makes a quick return to the series. She’s holding Ilithyia’s baby and tells a bewildered Ashur that he should have died at Vesuvius. She explains that fate is complex and that his death wasn’t the only possible outcome. She then sends him to an alternate reality where he survives and is the one who kills Spartacus, earning him his own Ludis as a reward.
The story of House of Ashur opens with its famously unlikeable main character waking up in bed with women on either side, seemingly having forgotten everything that’s happened before. The central question now is whether Ashur can reform his behavior, or if he’s doomed to repeat his mistakes. According to creator Steven S. DeKnight, who told Deadline, “I know the answer to that, because I know how the series ends,”…
I won’t spoil it, but that’s the most compelling aspect for me. I really enjoyed watching shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad because they explore whether characters can rise above their flaws and change for the better. That internal struggle is what I find truly fascinating.
