The ever-expanding Spawn Universe welcomes a fresh hellspawn addition. In the initial days of Spawn, one of the most influential tales revolved around the brutal murder of a young girl named Sherlee Johnson, perpetrated by the child serial killer Billy Kincaid. This dark narrative was introduced in Spawn #5, back in 1992, where Billy made his first appearance and later became a persistent antagonist across the series.
However, many devoted fans of Spawn might have overlooked another character: the seven-year-old victim herself, Sherlee Johnson. Now, she’s stepping into the limelight with her tale being delved into in a Spawn spinoff. This storyline will also introduce a new character to the series.
In an interview, ComicBook chat with Todd McFarlane, Daniel Henriques, and Jonathan Glapion regarding issue #3 of The Curse of Sherlee Johnson. The creators shared that this issue introduces a fresh hellspawn. As Daniel put it, “This is an exciting issue, and I say that as someone who’s been marveling at all of Jonathan’s artwork.” With numerous new settings and events unfolding due to the characters running and surviving, things take a brief pause for respite. This allows us to delve deeper into the realms of Hell, introducing fresh characters onto the scene.

He noted, ‘I won’t delve too deeply into the specifics, but a fresh, exciting addition – a hellspawn – appears in Issue #3, which is arguably one of Jonathan’s finest splash pages I’ve ever seen. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for this reveal!’
The Curse of Sherlee Johnson Explores Untold Spawn Story
Previously, Daniel Henriques explained in an interview what motivated him to develop a narrative focusing on Sherlee Johnson’s destiny at the hands of Billy Kincaid. According to Henriques, although Spawn pursued justice for Sherlee by murdering Billy and leaving his corpse with the police, he didn’t take the time to check if she was still alive afterward.
He remarked, “It’s uncertain whether she’s really deceased.” Pondering this, he asked, “Could it be possible that she isn’t? After all, Spawn didn’t necessarily do anything to rescue the person who led him to this situation. Instead, what actions might Spawn have taken or not taken?
He pointed out that if Sherlee were alive and aware during Spawn’s clash with Kincaid, she would have witnessed him severely assaulting Kincaid, perhaps a huge burst of him vanishing mysteriously, and that would be it, leaving her to perish alone. I’ve always pondered, “Where does this lead, what transpires next?
Todd McFarlane was genuinely fond of the concept and it offers an opportunity to delve into Spawn’s complexities as a flawed yet heroic character.
The issue with the character acting as both judge, jury, and executioner is, there can be serious consequences, isn’t that correct?” he stated. “In our approach with the Spawn character, we’ve tried to explore those implications more thoroughly. While most heroes believe they are doing what’s right, it’s important to question whether their actions have unintended consequences. For instance, when a character, without proper investigation, kills another who allegedly harmed children, there may be far-reaching repercussions. In this case, the character’s approach was overly simplistic, leading to complications down the line.
