Speak No Evil director talks about the original version and THAT bleak end

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for unconventional films that leave a lasting impact, I must say, Speak No Evil (2022) is a cinematic tour de force not to be missed. The Danish-Dutch drama, directed by Christian Tafdrup, masterfully weaves a tale of an idyllic weekend gone awry, turning the concept of politeness into a chilling exercise in discomfort.

As a devoted cinephile, I had the opportunity to watch “Speak No Evil,” a Dutch production that graced our screens in 2022. This gripping film, co-written and directed by Christian Tafdrup, revolves around a Danish family’s visit to their newly met Dutch counterparts during a holiday. Initially, it appeared as if we were in for an idyllic weekend; however, the facade of politeness began to crumble as the Danes found themselves in increasingly uncomfortable situations. By the bleakest of endings, things had reached a level of awkwardness and unpleasantness that was almost unbearable.

Recently, we’ve been able to discuss with director Christian Tafdrup about the true event that inspired the script for Speak No Evil (2022), which is now available on DVD, as well as the alternate ending that was discarded in favor of the current, extremely grim one featured in the film.
