In the thrilling climax of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” I’m compelled to make a heartrending choice. To mend the multiverse, I implore Doctor Strange to weave a spell that causes everyone, including my dearest friends, to forget about me. As the credits roll, I ready myself to reacquaint myself with Ned Leeds and MJ. But then, in the film’s last glimpses, I notice these two former companions basking in a blissful life devoid of me, celebrating their acceptance into MIT. Though our bond has been severed, it seems like “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will pick up this storyline by filling us in on Peter’s old pals’ lives post-me.
In the realm of X, Culture Crave’s account posted a fresh behind-the-scenes photo from the set of ‘Brand New Day’, hinting at a reunion reminiscent of ‘No Way Home’. The snapshot features Tom Holland donning his latest Spider-Man costume, alongside Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, who played MJ and Ned in the initial three Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man films. Interestingly, Batalon is depicted wearing an MIT t-shirt, suggesting that Ned remains a student at the institution. Here’s the image you can take a look at below:

MJ & Ned Should Only Have Small Roles in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Given the significant roles played by MJ and Ned in the initial Spider-Man trilogy within the MCU, it’s reasonable to expect their involvement in some aspect of Brand New Day. However, the filmmakers should tread carefully with their depiction to avoid undermining the emotional impact of the ending in No Way Home. The closing scene was a powerful reminder of the essence of “great responsibility.” Allowing Ned and MJ to recall Peter’s identity and reunite with him could lessen the significance of that poignant finale, detracting from the entire narrative arc of No Way Home. So, preserving their friendship as it stands seems more fitting for the storyline.
In simpler terms, it might be more effective for MJ and Ned to have limited appearances in the film, ideally at the beginning to signify that Peter is maintaining a distant but caring watch over them. A scene could be set on a rooftop, where Peter observes Ned returning to school after summer break, subtly establishing Peter’s character development for the storyline called “Brand New Day“. This approach underscores Peter’s dilemma following his decision in “No Way Home“, as he may be hesitant to form new relationships given all he’s been through. Instead, he might choose to have one-sided connections with his old schoolmates.
In simpler terms, it makes perfect sense within the story that Ned and MJ are studying at MIT, which is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This means they’re far from New York City, where most of the events in “Brand New Day” take place. The series focuses on Spider-Man returning to his urban roots and telling stories centered around city life. As a result, Ned and MJ can’t play significant roles because they’re out of state.
The relationship among Peter, Ned, and MJ significantly shaped the emotional heart of the past Spider-Man films, with No Way Home standing out particularly. For many viewers, it may feel unusual to watch a movie where Ned and MJ aren’t central characters. Luckily, director Destin Daniel Cretton has enriched the cast of Brand New Day with an array of captivating actors. Notable returning Marvel stars include Mark Ruffalo, Jon Bernthal, and Michael Mando, while there’s excitement about Sadie Sink’s role as well. Given all these new additions and intriguing plot developments, it’s possible that viewers might stop missing Ned and MJ by the time Brand New Day fully unfolds, setting off a fresh chapter for our neighborhood Spider-Man.
