Fans have long hoped for Spider-Man 4, a movie that would bring Sam Raimi back to direct Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst as Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. Raimi had started planning this fourth film, intending to feature The Vulture as the main villain. There were reports that another villain might have appeared alongside John Malkovich’s Vulture, but Raimi recently confirmed this wasn’t true. Surprisingly, dismissing that rumor has actually created even more curiosity about the canceled project.
While promoting his new horror film, Send Help, Sam Raimi spoke with Cinema Blend about Spider-Man 4. He clarified that they never auditioned actresses for villain roles. Raimi mentioned discussing the Vulture with John Malkovich, but the film ultimately didn’t move forward. This seems to dismiss long-standing rumors that either Black Cat or a new female villain called “Vulturess” would appear in the canceled sequel, despite previous hints to the contrary.
Spider-Man 4’s Previous Rumors

A recent interview brought up a curious detail: both director Sam Raimi and actress Anne Hathaway previously stated that Hathaway was once cast in a role. Hathaway herself confirmed she’d been chosen to play Black Cat in the cancelled Spider-Man 4, but never got to wear the costume or see the full script. As she explained, she only made it through the audition process and believes the reasons the project fell apart are best explained by the producers.
Hathaway added that the Spider-Man franchise has become incredibly vast and exciting, constantly evolving and reinventing itself, and she didn’t want to overstate her involvement. It’s somewhat amusing, though, considering she later played Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
There’s growing optimism about the possibility of a Spider-Man 4 movie. Tobey Maguire’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the popularity of the Spider-Verse films have fueled fan demand for another film starring him. Director Sam Raimi recently indicated on Reddit that he’s interested in making more comic book movies, too.
