The release of Sony’s *Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse* has been quite complicated. Over the past year and a half, the film’s release date has changed multiple times, and it was even temporarily removed from the schedule. Originally planned for June 25, 2027, the film will now compete with a new Disney movie when it’s released.
There’s an update on the release of *Beyond the Spider-Verse*. While the film is still delayed from its original June 4th, 2027 date, it’s been moved up! It’s now scheduled to hit theaters on June 18th, 2017 – which also happens to fall on Father’s Day weekend.
A Disney Collision
Another noteworthy aspect of the release date shift is that *Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse* will now be released at the same time as a new animated movie from Disney and Pixar. Sony’s third *Spider-Verse* film will compete with Pixar’s upcoming original film, *Gatto*, which was first announced earlier in the year.
Set in Venice, Italy, *Gatto* tells the story of Nero, a black cat who’s starting to question if he’s truly lived a full life. He’s got a lot on his plate – not only figuring that out, but also dodging a dangerous mob boss he owes money to. Things get interesting when he meets Maya, a street artist, and their chance encounter could be exactly what Nero needs to finally live his best life.
Now the big question is whether *Gatto* will still be released as planned, given the new competition. If this were a sequel like *Toy Story 5* or *Incredibles 3*, Disney would definitely stick to the original plan, and *Spider-Verse* probably wouldn’t even compete. However, *Gatto* is a brand new story, and since Disney’s *Elio* didn’t perform well at the box office recently, it’s possible they might decide to release *Gatto* at a different time to avoid the competition.
The Spider-Verse movies have been very successful in theaters. *Into the Spider-Verse* earned $393 million worldwide in 2018, and *Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse* nearly doubled that, bringing in $690 million in 2023. The next film, *Beyond the Spider-Verse*, could potentially earn even more, but we’ll have to wait and see how it performs.
