The new Spider-Man comic, Brand New Day, is following the dramatic path set by the movie No Way Home by seemingly wiping Peter Parker from everyone’s memory. While it’s unclear exactly how complicated the effects of Doctor Strange’s spell will be – considering many Marvel characters know both Peter and Spider-Man – Brand New Day will likely focus on how this spell has damaged Peter’s relationship with his girlfriend, Michelle Jones-Watson (MJ).
Even if you didn’t love Spider-Man: No Way Home – maybe you found it stretched belief with its returning villains – it’s clear that the movie’s take on the “One More Day” story was a significant improvement over the comic book version from almost twenty years ago. Because the movie handled that story so much better, there’s good reason to believe the upcoming adaptation of “Brand New Day” will also be a success.
The MCU, Comics’ Brand New Days Will Be Night & Day
The ‘One More Day’ storyline in Spider-Man is widely considered a deeply flawed and damaging event in comic book history. By undoing Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage, it negatively impacted Spider-Man comics and how the characters were portrayed afterward. The subsequent ‘Brand New Day’ era of comics was generally considered underwhelming and lacked momentum.
Unfortunately, the spell had an unexpected consequence: everyone, including MJ, also forgot Peter Parker. While the comic books haven’t allowed Peter and MJ to find lasting happiness, there’s a good chance the Marvel Cinematic Universe will give them a different ending.
The MCU Wouldn’t Dare Split Tom Holland & Zendaya
It would be surprising if the Marvel Cinematic Universe permanently broke up Peter Parker and MJ. So much has been established to connect them – Peter is clearly still deeply in love with MJ, as shown by his actions, and it’s hard to imagine him developing feelings for anyone else for the foreseeable future of the franchise.
Peter developing feelings for someone else wouldn’t make sense, considering he’s intentionally kept his distance from MJ – treating her as either a stranger or just a customer. He’s spent the last four years wanting to be with MJ, and hopefully, he won’t regret that decision and change his mind like Andrew Garfield’s Peter did with Gwen Stacy, constantly second-guessing himself.
It also makes sense for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to highlight the genuine connection between Tom Holland and Zendaya, who are a couple in real life. Ultimately, it feels inevitable that MJ will remember Peter Parker – whether it happens in Spider-Man: Brand New Day or a later film – or maybe she’ll fall in love with him again, prompting Peter to reveal his secret identity.
