The new Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, is scheduled for release in 2026 and will be a fresh take on the character, differing significantly from the previous three films. Marvel is placing a lot of hope in Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday – the first major crossover since Avengers: Endgame – as these are currently the only two movies planned for release that year. Spider-Man is a particularly important franchise for Marvel right now, as it’s recently been the only one consistently earning over a billion dollars at the box office. With the movie industry experiencing a downturn, Marvel is counting on Spider-Man to bring audiences back to theaters, which is why comments from director Destin Daniel Cretton about changing the established formula are raising some concerns.
During an interview at the Wonder Man press event, Destin Daniel Cretton shared his enthusiasm about directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He explained that he’s making changes to the film to differentiate it from the previous three Spider-Man movies. Cretton, known for directing the first two episodes of Wonder Man and the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, called directing Spider-Man a dream come true.
You know, he usually doesn’t like to say anything is the defining moment of his career, but he was really clear about Spider-Man. He said he always asks himself if a project will genuinely excite him for the next couple of years, and with Spider-Man, the answer was a definite yes! It’s clearly a project he’s really passionate about.
The director explained that he aimed to create a unique feel for the new Marvel movie, differentiating it from previous Spider-Man films. He approached his work as showrunner for Wonder Man with the same goal. According to the director, everyone involved wanted to try something fresh. While still maintaining the core of what fans love about Spider-Man, this new installment explores a different stage in his life, and that change in tone was particularly appealing and rewarding.
What Does This Mean For Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

The director recently made a noteworthy comment, marking the first time anyone involved has discussed the film’s overall “tone.” Sadie Sink has also subtly suggested the movie would feel different from previous installments, though she’s been careful not to reveal too much. This makes sense considering the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker chose to have everyone forget him.
It’s confusing that Peter Parker’s friends have no memory of him, yet he was still able to secure an apartment – implying he established credit and financial stability. This sets the stage for a fresh start, similar to the “Brand New Day” comic storyline, and will likely involve Spider-Man being completely on his own.
When Spider-Man first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he had a strong support system with Iron Man (Tony Stark), Happy Hogan, and his Aunt May. His friends Ned and MJ were always there for him too. But the new movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, seems to be taking a different approach – he’s facing everything alone. This suggests a more serious and challenging story, especially with so many villains expected to appear. Luckily, the director, Destin Daniel Cretton, has a history of making compelling films, which points to an exciting new direction for Spider-Man.
