Next year promises a lot of big-budget movies, and as a result, the summer movie season is already packed with major releases. July is shaping up to be especially busy, with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day debuting just weeks apart. This close timing will likely create a similar buzz to ‘Barbenheimer’ for fans of Tom Holland, but it also means Brand New Day won’t be released in premium formats like IMAX or 3D.
A recent IMAX investor presentation revealed which 2026 movies will be shown in IMAX theaters. Surprisingly, the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day wasn’t listed. The Odyssey, set to release July 17, 2026, will be in IMAX, followed by the sci-fi film Flowervale Street starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway in August. It seems Brand New Day was left out of the schedule to make room for The Odyssey.
The Odyssey Will Be One of the Biggest IMAX Events of 2026

While plans can always change, it looks like The Odyssey is set to have a longer-than-usual run in IMAX theaters. Usually, films only play in IMAX for a week or two before the next big movie comes out. For example, Predator: Badlands will be in IMAX this November, followed by The Running Man a week later. Because there are still fewer IMAX theaters than regular ones, theaters generally prioritize showing the newest releases. The fact that Brand New Day won’t be getting an IMAX release shortly after The Odyssey suggests that IMAX intends to keep showing The Odyssey for quite a while.
Tickets for the IMAX version of Odyssey went on sale a year before the release date and sold out almost immediately. Because Christopher Nolan is a well-respected director and Odyssey is a large-scale film, IMAX expects high demand. It’s rare for a non-superhero movie to take over IMAX screens, but a new Nolan film is an exception. His previous movie, Oppenheimer, was incredibly popular in IMAX, and ever since The Dark Knight, audiences have strongly associated Nolan’s films with the IMAX experience.
If IMAX keeps its current schedule (which isn’t a complete list of everything they’ll show), this will be the first time a solo Spider-Man movie hasn’t been shown in IMAX. Previous Spider-Man films all had IMAX releases, but they weren’t released around the same time as a Christopher Nolan movie, so they didn’t have to compete for screen space. While the new Spider-Man film, Brand New Day, won’t be in IMAX, Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday is still planned for an IMAX release in December 2026.
Even though Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t currently scheduled for IMAX, it could be shown in IMAX theaters later. Theaters often show older movies when there aren’t any new big releases, as it’s a simple way to boost profits. For example, Sinners is returning to IMAX for Halloween because there are no major new films coming out that week. Spider-Man: Brand New Day might find a spot on the IMAX schedule eventually, possibly before Avengers: Doomsday comes out.
