Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Latest Update Confirms an MCU Change Behind the Scenes (But It Makes Sense)

Spider-Man fans are eagerly awaiting a glimpse of the new movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Excitement for a new Spider-Man film is always high, but this time feels different. Not only is it the last Marvel movie before Avengers: Doomsday, but it also has to deal with the story threads left hanging after Spider-Man: No Way Home and the many characters expected to return.

Tom Holland’s return as Spider-Man is generating a lot of excitement among fans. As we await the next trailer, news has surfaced about a significant change for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. According to TheWrap, Justin Kuritzkes will now be credited as a screenwriter on the film. He revised the initial script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who wrote the previous three Spider-Man movies with Holland. For those familiar with Kuritzkes’ work, this news likely explains a lot about the direction the film is taking.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s New Screenwriter Is an Exciting MCU Change

I was really impressed by Justin Kuritzkes’ work on Challengers, especially considering it was only his second writing credit! The screenplay was fantastic – it even earned him a nomination from the Writers Guild of America. And honestly, with Zendaya starring, it’s not surprising he got the job – what a perfect pairing!

What’s particularly noteworthy is that Kuritzkes received official writing credit, indicating a significant contribution to the film. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have written all three Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland. They were initially brought onto Spider-Man: Homecoming during production and their successful collaboration with Marvel and Sony led to them returning for the subsequent sequels.

I’m a big fan of the Spider-Man movies, and I’ve always appreciated the writing team of McKenna and Sommers. They’ve been the main writers since Homecoming, but it’s interesting to see them share the credit with someone else – Kuritzkes – for the newest film. It’s the first time since 2017 that they haven’t been the only ones credited on a Spider-Man movie, which is a bit of a change!

Tom Holland, known for accidentally revealing spoilers, hinted at Kuritzkes’ work on Spider-Man: Brand New Day during an appearance on the “Good Hang with Amy Poehler” podcast. He shared a story about a writer named Justin who helped improve a key scene in the film.

Tom Holland shared that he and his wife, Zendaya, felt a particular scene in the movie wasn’t quite right. They discussed it with the director, Destin Daniel Cretton, and the writer – whom Holland praised – and decided to reshoot it. Holland was happy they did, saying the revised scene now works beautifully in the film.

As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’m so excited to share that Sony is hosting a global fan event in Amsterdam on June 17th! Everyone’s hoping we’ll finally get a new trailer for the movie then, though I’m sure there will be plenty of other cool surprises too. Mark your calendars, because Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31st!
