The next Marvel Studios movie is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While it’s coming out before Avengers: Doomsday, details about the film are surprisingly scarce. We know some familiar characters will return, like Scorpion and Hulk (played by Mark Ruffalo). Jon Bernthal is also joining the cast as the Punisher, moving from the TV series to the big screen. However, what kicks off the story and what roles some actors will play are still unknown.
Liza Colón-Zayas, known from the show The Bear, is generating buzz with her role in the new Spider-Man movie. Some fans are hoping she’s playing Rio Morales, Miles Morales’ mother, potentially leading to his appearance. However, that seems unlikely. Now, attention is focused on Sadie Sink, and speculation is growing about her character. While a red-haired young woman suggests a connection to Mary Jane Watson, Zendaya already plays that role. Many Marvel enthusiasts now believe Sink will be linked to a different hero. Despite the evidence supporting this idea, there’s a crucial detail people are overlooking that could change everything.
Marvel Fans Think They’ve Cracked the Sadie Sink Code

For months, fans speculated about what role Dove Cameron (previously known as Sydney Sink) would play – possibilities included Mary Jane Watson, Mayday Parker, and even Jean Grey. But when set photos from Brand New Day were released, everything changed. One photo showed Cameron chatting with director Destin Daniel Cretton, bundled up in a large coat clearly meant to conceal her costume. However, a glimpse of combat boots and camouflage pants suggested she’ll be heavily involved in the film’s action sequences. The only other character with a similar look is the Punisher, who often works alone, but has occasionally taken on a mentoring role in the comics.
I recently read The Punisher (Vol. 9) #11, and it introduced this amazing new character, Rachel Cole-Alves. Her story is heartbreaking – she’s a Marine who loses her whole family at her wedding and immediately decides to hunt down those responsible. It’s a classic revenge plot, and honestly, I was hooked. What’s really cool is that she eventually meets the Punisher, and he respects her methods, even helping her out a few times. They make a fantastic team, taking down bad guys left and right. They even share a striking similarity – red hair, which is a fun nod. But there’s a bigger issue looming, something that, as a fan, I think would make a live-action team-up between Rachel and the Punisher pretty much impossible.
Brand New Day Is a Spider-Man Movie, Not a Punisher One

Many fans are excited about the possibility of seeing the Punisher and Spider-Man team up on screen. Their dynamic is compelling in the comics, and actors Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland already have great on-screen chemistry from their previous work together in films like Pilgrimage and The Odyssey. However, this won’t be a story solely focused on Spider-Man and the Punisher; other characters will play significant roles, especially Hulk, who will share scenes with Spider-Man, and the hero will face off against at least one villain. Fortunately for Punisher fans, he’s also getting his own series on Disney+ which should be released before the next Spider-Man movie.
On-set pictures reveal that The Punisher will battle the villain Ma Gnucci in his upcoming film. Interestingly, all the photos show him fighting solo, which could be a problem for the character Rachel. She needs significant screen time to properly introduce her and her relationship with the Punisher. Unless she appears in this film, it’s unlikely Rachel will make her live-action debut in Brand New Day, as the movie wouldn’t be able to give her a substantial enough role to justify it.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
