As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’m really excited about what’s coming next for him in the MCU! Apparently, he’s going to be dealing with the Punisher, Frank Castle, which is a fascinating dynamic – Peter just operates on a totally different moral level. The big thing bringing them together seems to be the Hulk, who’s been unusually calm lately, so everyone’s expecting him to finally snap. But don’t worry, it’s not going to be a movie *just* about Spidey fighting other heroes; there’s definitely more to the story.
While the list of villains in the upcoming *Brand New Day* isn’t extensive yet, it’s beginning to suggest a serious threat. Scorpion will be back after a quick appearance in *Spider-Man: Homecoming*, likely still seeking revenge on Spider-Man for his imprisonment. However, the plans of another confirmed villain could be much bigger, as they have ties to a character with a long and intense rivalry with Spider-Man.
Marvel’s Tombstone Doesn’t Always Work Alone
New York City is a dangerous place, particularly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One day it might face an alien invasion, the next, a supervillain causing widespread terror. While those are problems for the Avengers, Spider-Man is now focused on street-level crime. He’ll be keeping an eye on local gangs and trying to make his city a little safer. The newest threat in *Brand New Day*, the villain Tombstone – again played by Marvin Jones III – is a criminal mastermind who leads his own gang and is always looking for a way to make money.
Tombstone isn’t as powerful or well-connected as other criminals in New York, which often leaves him relying on others. Kingpin, who sometimes holds the position of mayor, frequently gives him assignments. In the comics, Tombstone handles the dangerous tasks Kingpin avoids, and his enhanced strength and toughness ensure those jobs get done. This strong partnership continues in the *Spider-Verse* movies, where they battle Miles Morales and his allies while trying to protect the Super-Collider. While it seems unlikely the MCU’s Spider-Man will need to gather a team of alternate versions of himself like in *Brand New Day*, a confrontation with Tombstone could attract Kingpin’s attention and potentially confirm a major theory about *Spider-Man 5*.
It’s Time for Spider-Man and Kingpin to Face Off
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has generally kept Kingpin focused on conflicts with heroes who operate on a smaller, street-level scale, like Daredevil, Kate Bishop, and Echo. He hasn’t gone after more powerful figures like Doctor Strange, nor has he used his task force against threats like Sentry. But Spider-Man’s upcoming activities will likely force Kingpin to take action, particularly if he wants to keep his criminal operations hidden. As other criminals like Tombstone are taken down, Kingpin may decide he needs to personally handle the situation. The movie could even end with a post-credits scene similar to the one in *Avengers: Age of Ultron*, hinting at a larger move by Kingpin.
Fans are hoping the next *Spider-Man* movie will include a team-up between Peter Parker and Daredevil. Spider-Man often works with other Marvel heroes, and this could set up a final showdown with Kingpin. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Kingpin in *Daredevil: Born Again*, has expressed his desire to see his character face off against Spider-Man, and many believe he deserves that opportunity. D’Onofrio suggests there have been legal hurdles preventing Kingpin from appearing in more projects, but he believes Marvel Studios has time to resolve those issues and create a truly great Spider-Man story.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
