In 2026’s highly anticipated “Spider-Man: Fresh Start”, Tom Holland reprises his role as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking an intriguing deviation from a concerning pattern for the Multiverse Storyline. Set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026, during Phase 6 of the MCU, this film promises a thrilling collaboration between Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, Frank Castle’s Punisher, and Bruce Banner’s Hulk in an action-packed team-up. The announcement of a new standalone “Spider-Man” movie is noteworthy for more reasons than just Holland’s return to the MCU; it also signals a disruptive twist in the Multiverse Saga narrative.
One issue that Marvel Studios has frequently encountered during the Multiverse Saga is that many exciting new characters haven’t received follow-up movies or further stories since their initial appearances. Notably, no sequels to any Multiverse Saga projects have been unveiled within the saga itself. However, this pattern will be disrupted with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which is the sequel to “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and was released on December 17, 2021, marking a significant part of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) debated Phase 4.
Currently, movies like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Eternals,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and others don’t have sequels planned within the Multiverse Saga. As such, it appears that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” may be the only upcoming solo movie sequel in the near future. However, “Shang-Chi 2,” “Doctor Strange 3,” “Black Panther 3,” and more are slated for the MCU’s future, though they likely won’t be released until after “Avengers: Secret Wars.
While many films in the Multiverse Saga are continuations of projects from the Infinity Saga, none of these sequels have been released yet within the Multiverse Saga itself. The upcoming movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” marks the beginning of this trend, with “Avengers: Secret Wars” and “Avengers: Doomsday” set to follow in 2026 and 2026 respectively. It’s surprising that Marvel Studios hasn’t delved deeper into creating standalone stories for the Multiverse Saga, leading to concerns that “Doomsday” might not provide adequate character development for various heroes, since some may have only appeared in a single project up until now.
James Gunn has confirmed that Man of Tomorrow, which is like a follow-up to the 2025 Superman movie in the DC Universe, will come out just two years later. On the other hand, Marvel Studios has temporarily paused work on sequels. However, there’s excitement about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to release five years after its previous version. This new Spider-Man film promises to show Tom Holland as a more mature hero and fans are eagerly waiting for his next appearance.
