Spider-Man Director Finally Reveals the Real Reason He Exited Fantastic Four

Jon Watts, who led the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy, explains why he chose to part ways with The Fantastic Four: First Steps as its director. In a talk at a storytelling workshop at the Mediterrane Film Festival (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter), Watts shared that he was emotionally exhausted following the process of making Spider-Man: No Way Home, which not only became a major studio blockbuster but also underwent production during the pandemic. Managing COVID-19 precautions on top of other duties made Watts understand that he required some time off from large-scale filmmaking. Although he had previously agreed to direct Fantastic Four, he graciously stepped down from the director’s position.

Director Watts expressed that navigating through the COVID protocols while still trying to produce something creative, ensuring safety for the entire cast and crew (as mistakes could have potentially been fatal), plus the complex post-production process, presented immense challenges. Furthermore, since visual effects work involves a global network of vendors, the disruptions in supply chains due to COVID made it extremely difficult to complete effects traditionally.

He went on to explain, “Given the additional challenges of producing a movie during the COVID-19 pandemic, I realized I didn’t have the necessary energy to create an outstanding film. I was simply exhausted and needed a break to recharge. Fortunately, everyone at Marvel was understanding because they had faced similar challenges with me before; they knew how tough and exhausting that experience could be, yet ultimately rewarding. If one can’t give their best to make it exceptional, then it’s wiser not to attempt it.

In 2020, Watts agreed to direct the reboot of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Fantastic Four, which was a year before Spider-Man: No Way Home smashed box office records. However, he left the project in April 2022. At that time, it was mentioned that both Watts and Marvel Studios were open to collaborating on another venture in the future. After completing his Spider-Man trilogy, Watts directed the George Clooney and Brad Pitt movie Wolfs and co-developed the Star Wars TV series titled Skeleton Crew.

The director of the series “WandaVision,” Matt Shakman, has taken over from Watts in directing the upcoming “Fantastic Four” film, which is scheduled for release next month. This movie marks the beginning of Phase 6 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it lays the groundwork for Marvel’s First Family, who are expected to play a more significant role in the franchise going forward. Actors Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who were featured in “Fantastic Four,” are also set to appear in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Additionally, it’s reported that a sequel for “Fantastic Four” is already being developed.

Jon Watts showcased his prowess with the Spider-Man trilogy, making one wonder how he would invigorate another iconic Marvel franchise. Simultaneously, it seems wise that he recognized the need for a rest. Crafting a studio blockbuster is challenging in normal times, let alone during a global pandemic, as was the case with Spider-Man: No Way Home. Given the immense acclaim it received, one can imagine the strain on the director. If Watts had jumped straight into directing Fantastic Four without taking time to recharge, it could have affected the movie negatively. As one of Marvel’s key projects towards the end of the Multiverse Saga, First Steps requires widespread appreciation to conclude the MCU on a triumphant note. A weary director might not have been able to provide the film with the focus it required.

It’s clear that Shakman’s concept for “First Steps” has been a success so far. Right from the start, people have shown enthusiasm for the movie, appreciating the cast and the 60s-inspired blend of retro-futuristic style. Here’s hoping “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will finally do the team proud on the silver screen. It’s also comforting to know that Watts and Marvel are still getting along well. Watts has been a perfect fit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though he won’t be leading “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”. There are plenty of other Marvel movies where he could direct in the future.
