Despite Disney+ housing almost all the back catalog of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a notable exception has persisted for years – the highly successful film “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” This blockbuster, which ranks as the second highest-grossing Marvel Studios movie ever made and is also the most lucrative Spider-Man film in history, remains mysteriously absent from Disney+.
Since its release in December 2021, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has been playing in cinemas. Now, various Spidey films have found their way onto Disney+. As of now, the streaming platform offers “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, all three Tobey Maguire films, both Andrew Garfield outings, one of the “Venom” movies, and even 2022’s “Morbius”. So, let’s talk about the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure featuring Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Essentially, it boils down to streaming rights.
In April 2021, Disney+ reached an arrangement with Sony Pictures, who possess the movie rights for Spider-Man and collaborate with Marvel Studios in producing the character’s standalone MCU films. According to this contract, Disney+ was allowed to stream all of Sony’s Spider-Man films… with one notable exception.
The key aspects of the Disney-Sony agreement primarily revolve around streaming rights and the deal Sony struck with Netflix significantly influences it (as reported by Variety). Essentially, nine months after most of Sony’s Spider-Man or related films conclude their theatrical showings, they become available on Netflix, where they are exclusive for a period of 18 months. This is known as the “Pay 1 window.
Based on agreements between Sony and Disney, movies no longer available on Netflix will join the lineup of Disney+ during the “Pay 2” window. As a result, most standalone Spider-Man films are currently accessible on Disney+ for streaming.
The important point is: Disney’s agreement with Sony applies to Spider-Man films that premiere in theaters from 2022 onwards. Unfortunately, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released on December 21, 2021, falls outside this window.
Prior to Sony striking deals with Netflix and Disney+, it maintained a long-term relationship with Starz. The movie “No Way Home” is part of that agreement, meaning it has been available for streaming on Starz’s app since January 14, 2024.
Although all hope seems grim, there’s a silver lining. Just as Netflix can keep Sony films for 18 months, Starz has the same limitation. So, counting from January 14, 2024, and adding the 18-month period, we arrive at July 14, 2025.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, it’s essential to clarify that, as of now, there’s no confirmed news about “Spider-Man: No Way Home” making its way onto Disney+ or departing from Starz. In fact, it wasn’t even mentioned in Disney+’s July 2025 “Next On” video, so let’s all keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best!
Despite occasional inconsistencies, Disney+ sometimes falls short in announcing new content additions with the expected excitement. One might expect a major platform like this to generate buzz on social media for the arrival of a blockbuster Marvel film. However, at the moment, no such anticipation has been noticeable. Furthermore, it’s worth mentioning that the speculated release date for Spider-Man: No Way Home is rapidly approaching.
Each part of this intricate puzzle represents a crucial element in a business contract. To maintain harmony among the shareholders and keep everyone on the same page, it’s essential that we adhere to a set timetable.
If July 14 passes without “No Way Home” appearing on Disney+, it’s probably indicating that some unexpected events have taken place backstage, known only to the parties directly involved. However, the clear evidence and intuition suggest that something significant is at play in this situation.
Under the guidance of director Jon Watts, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” made its debut in cinemas on December 21, 2021. The film featured Tom Holland as the main Spiderman, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. Notably, it was revealed that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would reappear in their previous Spider-Man roles from the big screen to assist Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, a fact that had been widely speculated within Hollywood at the time.
What About Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Disney+ Chances?
Tom Holland’s next appearance as Peter Parker will be in the movie titled “Spider-Man: Fresh Start“, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. This marks the fourth standalone MCU film for the hero, set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026. Instead of teaming up with other Spidermen, Peter will take on a new role alongside New York City’s toughest and most ruthless vigilante, The Punisher (portrayed by Jon Bernthal). Additionally, there are rumors that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk character might reappear.
It’s highly likely that fans will be able to find “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on Disney+ for streaming at some point following its theatrical release.
This is because Sony’s streaming deal with Disney extends to cover its 2026 film slate.
In the team-up films featuring Spider-Man, like the Avengers series, it is Disney and Marvel Studios who have complete control over them. Therefore, when these movies make their appearance on Disney+, they become permanent fixtures on the platform.
