A fresh rendition of a memorable scene from “Avengers: Infinity War” was featured in the latest teaser for “Marvel Zombies”. Instead of one of Earth’s mightiest heroes, a different character took their place, offering a unique angle on the sequence. Despite being released seven years ago, the impact of “Avengers: Infinity War” continues to resonate within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). References to the Snap can still be seen in recent movies and television shows. Furthermore, upcoming titles are attempting to replicate certain moments from the film itself.
In Disney+’s freshly unveiled trailer for Marvel Zombies, there’s a brief scene towards the end showing Spider-Man and Thanos engaged in combat. Interestingly, Spider-Man is yet to be infected by the virus that turned Thanos into a zombie, while Thanos, on the other hand, has fully transformed into an undead version of himself, and he’s still got his Infinity Gauntlet and the Infinity Stones with him.
Specifically, in the trailer, Spider-Man takes Thor’s Stormbreaker axe and hurls it toward Thanos.
In mid-flight, it’s evident the axe is heading straight for Thanos, seemingly a lethal strike. But alas, much like Thor in “Avengers: Infinity War”, Spider-Man mistakenly aimed for another part of his body, not the head.
In the subsequent scene of the video, you can see Stormbreaker embedded in what appears to be Thanos’ chest. However, due to Thanos being a zombie and already possessing the Infinity Stones, a blow from an axe like Stormbreaker wouldn’t have any effect.
A swift transition showed Spider-Man swiftly recognizing his error, evident in his expression of surprise and a soft exclamation, “‘No.’” It’s worth noting that Thanos elevated the Infinity Gauntlet, hinting that he was about to employ one of the Stones against our heroes.
It’s important to mention that T’Challa, who goes by the superhero name Black Panther, and Scott Lang made an appearance together with Spider-Man in this part of the scene.
In this trailer scene, it appears they’ve almost precisely reenacted the instance from “Infinity War” where Thor attempted to intervene against Thanos upon his arrival in Wakanda. During that film, Thor managed to surprise Thanos and deliver a powerful blow to his chest with Stormbreaker.
Similarly to how it unfolds in the Marvel Zombies trailer, Thanos was not slain by the axe, instead he famously declared, “You should have aimed for the head.
The trailer for Zombies features a close-up shot of Spider-Man’s face, resembling the moment when Thor’s face was showcased in a close-up after Thanos mentioned going for his head in Avengers: Infinity War, just as Thanos snapped his fingers with the Infinity Gauntlet.
Interestingly, in both instances, it would have been more appropriate for each character to aim for their opponent’s head, albeit for contrasting motives. For Thor, striking or decapitating Thanos as he did in Endgame, would have prevented Thanos from carrying out the Snap since the Infinity Stones were attached to his gauntlet and not embedded in his skull.
In Marvel Zombies, it would have been more effective for Spider-Man to target Thanos’ head instead. This is because, as a rule in many zombie narratives, it’s the brain that keeps the body functioning. By decapitating Thanos, Spider-Man could have severed the connection between Thanos’ brain and his body, effectively ending the life of the zombified Thanos.

The Marvel Zombies animated series is set to debut on Disney+ on September 24, 2025. This upcoming show is a four-episode spin-off from Season 1 of What If…?, and it will star some familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, and David Harbour.
Is Thanos the Main Villain in Marvel Zombies?
It’s reasonable to assume that Thanos, being the chief villain in the Infinity Saga, might serve as the main antagonist in Marvel Zombies. However, contrary to expectations, this isn’t the case. Despite his possession of the Infinity Gauntlet and the Infinity Stones, the truth is different.
In the Marvel Zombies series, Thanos’ specific part has not been disclosed as of now. However, numerous shots suggest that he’s found at the same location, hinting that his appearance might be limited to a single early scene within the series.
In the thrilling world of Marvel, I find myself stepping into the role of the Scarlet Witch, also known as the Dead Queen, set to take center stage in the chilling saga, Marvel Zombies. Standing by my side as my loyal second-in-command is none other than Okoye. Amongst the ranks, you’ll find familiar faces like Ghost, Captain America, Hawkeye, and Abomination – all of whom I’ve inexplicably transformed into mindless zombie servants, loyal to my cause.
Mentioned earlier, Thanos appears just a handful of times in the two trailers for Zombies, suggesting his role might be limited in the upcoming series.
It’s important to point out that whenever a crowd of the undead characters appears, Thanos is conspicuously absent from them. This absence suggests that he won’t be involved with the massive horde in the series and instead might be undertaking a solo mission to infect as many people as possible.
