Spider-Man's New Foe Will Make Him Suffer Like Never Before

Peter Parker, the Spider-Man, is currently facing some tough times. The ongoing storyline in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ by Joe Kelly started with Doctor Doom becoming the new Sorcerer Supreme and entrusting him with the duty of protecting Earth against the eight Scions of Cyttorak the Destroyer. To aid Spider-Man, Doom gave him enchanted armor and eight Reeds of Raggadorr, which could restore his life when used. In ‘The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man’, Spider-Man has already perished in four battles against the Scions Cyntros, Cyperion, Cyrios, and Callix. This leaves only four more Reeds before all of Spider-Man’s lives are depleted.

However, it was Cyra’s ordeal that led Spider-Man, Peter Parker, to decide to retire, following her demonstration of the grim outcomes for his family, acquaintances, and multitudes in issue #65 of Amazing Spider-Man. Under the guise of Phil Coulson, Death’s reincarnation, she guided these individuals towards the afterlife. In a dismal forecast, Cyra revealed to Peter the tragic ends that awaited Miles Morales, Bailey Briggs/Spider-Boy, and Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider, all destined to meet their demise at the hands of an imposing villain concealed in darkness.

Cyra stated, “The coming generation of Spiders… will perish alongside many others.” She lamented, “Their deaths won’t hold significance in ending the Cataclysm. They are not martyrs; they are not heroes. They merely… die.” And now, we know who our antagonist is: Hellgate, a maniac who seeks to bring about Spider-Man’s downfall.

In April, Hellgate will debut in his complete form within the new issue #1 of Amazing Spider-Man, which is being relaunched by Kelly and artists Pepe Larraz (known for his work on X-Men) and series artist John Romita Jr. Their design for Hellgate has been unveiled, along with a glimpse at the interior artwork.

In the latest era, Spider-Man faces his toughest test yet with Hellgate, a foe that will push him to his physical and emotional limits in some of the fiercest fights of his career. This encounter is likely to alter the trajectory of Peter Parker’s life, affecting both his personal and professional endeavors, as suggested by Marvel. Throughout the initial year of this series, fans can look forward to unraveling the secrets surrounding Hellgate’s origins, identity, and objectives.

Marvel hints that a significant Spider-Man antagonist could be utilizing Spider-Man’s rogues in the upcoming relaunch. It’s possible that Hellgate is orchestrating the surge of supervillains, causing Spider-Man’s enemies to become more vicious, aggressive, and dangerous not only to Spider-Man but also to those around them, with Rhino being one example of a rampaging villain.

As a devoted cinephile, I find myself in the unique position of penning the next chapter, not starting anew, in the saga of one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history – Spider-Man. It’s both humbling and exhilarating to walk in the footsteps of those who have brilliantly brought this character to life before me. Once the enormity of this responsibility settles in, I spend countless hours reflecting on what makes Spider-Man so special, the tales that left an indelible mark on my heart at various stages of my life, and how to creatively weave together these cherished memories with the rich history that came before, while still blazing new trails.

Kelly went on to say, “I’m captivated by delving into the private worlds of these characters and unexplored aspects, such as Peter’s teenage years before he was known as ‘weakling Parker’ in high school. Simultaneously, I have a strong desire to take daring, unconventional approaches to observe how Spider-Man handles Marvel-sized challenges. Under pressure, diamonds are formed.

The six volume of ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ ends with issue #70 penned by Kelly on March 26th. Following this, a brand new Volume 1 written by Kelly, Larraz, and Romita Jr. is released on April 9th.
