Spider-Man’s Next TV Show Is Officially Making Up for 2 Wasted Maguire & Garfield Movie Villains

Even though Spider-Man has been featured in comics for decades and thousands of issues, only a few of his enemies have appeared in movies (the new film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, might change that). While different movie versions of Spider-Man haven’t always connected, some villains have been portrayed well, staying true to how fans know them from the comics. Unfortunately, others haven’t lived up to expectations and have disappointed fans with their poor treatment in the films.

Two Spider-Man villains, Sandman from Spider-Man 3 and Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, haven’t had the best portrayals. While they both reappeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and received slightly better versions of their stories, those improvements didn’t fully fix their initial poor adaptations. Fortunately, both characters are getting a fresh start in the upcoming Spider-Noir TV series, which could finally allow them to become the compelling villains they were always meant to be.

Spider-Man Noir Can Redeem Sandman and Electro

Look, as a longtime Spider-Man fan, I have to say I was cautiously optimistic about seeing Sandman and Electro return. Both characters were seriously underserved in their first live-action outings. Remember Thomas Haden Church as Sandman in Spider-Man 3? He was completely sidelined, almost an afterthought, because the movie was so focused on shoehorning Venom in. It felt like Sandman was just playing second fiddle to a worse villain. And then there’s Jamie Foxx’s Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2… wow. That version was a disaster. They completely butchered the character – the origin story, the look, everything that made Electro menacing was just… gone. It honestly felt like something straight out of Batman & Robin – a total destruction of a potentially great villain.

The upcoming series Spider-Noir will feature Jack Huston (from Boardwalk Empire) as Flint Marko, also known as Sandman. An actor yet to be announced will play Electro. A key benefit of using these villains is that fans know they haven’t been well-developed in past movies. But more importantly, Spider-Noir‘s eight-episode format allows for a much deeper exploration of Sandman and Electro as characters – something that was lacking in the feature films and which will make these versions more compelling.

A common complaint about these villains in their first appearances was their lack of compelling interactions with other bad guys, which was especially noticeable when they were forced to team up in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Spider-Man’s villains often work together, sometimes willingly, sometimes not, but these particular characters haven’t had memorable team dynamics in live-action films – something a Spider-Noir adaptation could address.

Spider-Man Noir May Create the Template for Some Villains

Sandman and Electro are just two of Spider-Man’s villains who will be featured. What’s especially exciting is that several of these villains will be appearing in live-action for the first time. Brendan Gleeson will play the gangster Silvio Silvermane in Spider-Noir, and Li Jun Lee will portray Cat Hardy, who is the Spider-Noir universe’s version of Black Cat.

It’s surprising these villains haven’t appeared in major films yet (though Felicity Jones did play Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 without the full costume). This gives Spider-Noir a unique opportunity to introduce them effectively. While some viewers may already know these characters, many will be encountering them for the first time – even as versions from a film noir universe. Spider-Noir can establish Black Cat as a complex character who blurs the line between good and evil, and showcase Silvermaine as a classic Marvel gangster.

Despite its strengths, Spider-Noir faces some limitations. Because the show is set in the 1930s, a character like Silvermaine might not ever become the robot fans know from the comics. Also, the introduction of “Cat Hardy” hinted at a more comic-accurate Black Cat appearing in future films, which required some changes to the series. Ultimately, Spider-Noir has the potential to introduce the idea of alternate Marvel universes and, importantly, to finally bring well-known Spider-Man villains to life.
