Spider-Man’s Sam Raimi Reveals His Problem With Modern Superhero Movies (And He’s Right)

I’ve been watching superhero movies for over 25 years, and it’s been amazing to see how they’ve changed! In the early 2000s, it felt like studios were still figuring out how to make them work. Then, the 2010s happened, and the Marvel movies just exploded – it was incredible! But lately, things feel different. 2025 seemed like a turning point, with horror and anime becoming more popular at the box office. Everyone’s been wondering what’s going on with superhero films, and it’s interesting to hear one of the people who helped start it all share their thoughts.

While promoting his new horror film Send Help, director Sam Raimi participated in a Reddit Q&A. When asked what he disliked most about current superhero movies, Raimi jokingly replied, “That I don’t get offered more directing opportunities!”

Sam Raimi Is One of the Best Superhero Movie Directors (but Will He Ever Make More?)

Sam Raimi’s response has a playful tone, but it also highlights an important point. He’s a key figure in modern superhero films, largely thanks to the original Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire. Those movies are still popular today, and Raimi’s unique style is a big reason why. At a time when other superhero films like X-Men were known for their humor, Raimi stayed true to the classic Spider-Man comics. He wasn’t afraid to embrace the fun and sometimes over-the-top elements, while still handling Peter Parker’s story with the seriousness and respect it deserved.

Even after two decades, many still consider Spider-Man 2 to be the greatest Marvel movie ever made, because it truly captures what people love about the character. Director Sam Raimi knew his Spider-Man films needed audiences to connect with Peter Parker as a person, so he focused on the emotional and human side of the story. Even the least-liked film in the original trilogy, Spider-Man 3, gives Peter a meaningful journey where he learns to stay grounded and own up to his errors.

Sam Raimi also made a significant impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe by directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although it’s not the highest-rated MCU film, it’s different from other movies in the Multiverse Saga because of Raimi’s unique style and direction. He was a great choice for this project, allowing him to incorporate his love of horror into some truly startling scenes (like Scarlet Witch’s intense confrontation with the Illuminati). Raimi’s combination of action and dark themes made Multiverse of Madness a fun and visually impressive film, proving how valuable it is to have a director with a strong, individual vision.

Sam Raimi seems eager to direct another superhero film, but it’s uncertain if he’ll get the opportunity. While Doctor Strange 3 is planned, it doesn’t have a release date or a director yet. Marvel is collaborating with Benedict Cumberbatch to find filmmakers he’d like to work with, potentially leading to a new director for the film. Meanwhile, screenwriter Mattson Tomlin is trying to develop Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire, but there are significant challenges to overcome before production can begin. Hopefully, Raimi will get another chance – his unique style and vision are exactly what the superhero genre needs.
