The new live-action series, Spider-Noir, has been rated TV-14 in the US and 16+ for streaming. This means it will be noticeably darker in tone than the typical, family-friendly Spider-Man stories people are used to.
Spider-Man’s History on Television
According to SuperHeroHype, the live-action Amazing Spider-Man TV series from the late 1970s has been given a TV-PG rating in retrospect. The more recent animated series Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, which had 13 episodes on MTV, also received a TV-PG rating. Other animated Spider-Man shows on Disney+ are rated anywhere from TV-Y to TV-Y7, depending on the level of fantasy violence.
TV shows receive ratings from the networks or producers themselves, as reported by TVGuidelines.org. A TV-14 rating means that the show, like Spider-Noir, might not be appropriate for viewers younger than 14, and could contain strong violence, language, or mature themes.
Franchises that usually appeal to younger audiences can see big changes in how people expect violence, language, and complex themes to be handled, even with small changes in their ratings. With Spider-Noir, the rating indicates a more mature and gritty take on the Spider-Man story.
A Noir-Inspired Take on Spider-Man
Prime Video announced that Spider-Noir features Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a world-weary private investigator in 1930s New York. The story follows Reilly as he confronts a painful past and a personal loss, all while being the city’s sole protector.
The trailer is filled with fast-paced, disturbing scenes, and Nicolas Cage’s character casually mentions getting into bar fights and being drunk. The show’s slogan, “With no power comes no responsibility,” flips the famous Spider-Man lesson on its head, hinting that this version of Spider-Man, Spider-Noir, won’t be held back by the usual sense of right and wrong.
Nicolas Cage has described his acting in the series as a blend of Humphrey Bogart’s seriousness and Bugs Bunny’s playfulness. However, the promotional materials suggest a darker, more serious tone, reminiscent of classic film noir.
As a big fan of classic film noir – you know, those gritty crime stories from the ’30s and ’40s – I was really intrigued by Spider-Noir. It definitely has that vibe, with a hero who isn’t exactly a saint and a world full of bad guys. But honestly, compared to something like The Boys on Prime Video, which really doesn’t hold back, Spider-Noir feels a little tame. It’s not quite as dark or intense, even though it’s trying to capture that same mature, morally gray atmosphere.

As a huge movie fan, I think leaning into a darker, more mature take on Spider-Noir – something that would get a TV-14 rating – could really unlock some exciting storytelling potential for Marvel on the small screen. It feels like they could explore some themes and ideas they haven’t been able to before.
What the TV-14 Rating Could Mean for Spider-Noir
The show’s TV-14 rating lets it delve into the complex and shadowy topics common in noir stories, like crime, dishonesty, and blurred lines between right and wrong. Unlike many Marvel shows designed for all ages, Spider-Noir seems to be trying a more grown-up style of storytelling.
Spider-Man stories have always blended serious issues with a hopeful and funny tone. Exploring a darker, film-noir style could lead to more complex moral choices for the character, but still keep the core of what makes Spider-Man, Spider-Man.
Introducing darker storylines into established franchises can sometimes cause disagreements among fans. What sets the Spider-Noir series apart is that it exists in its own separate universe, allowing the creators greater flexibility to explore different moods and themes.
It’s still uncertain if viewers will like this grimmer version of the story, but the series offers a uniquely stylish take on Spider-Man for television. It will be available on Prime Video starting May 27th, and MGM+ subscribers can watch it two days earlier.
